Boxing has been corrupt since the beginning of the sport. I always felt the judges should be watching and scoring the fight from a television, so they could clearly see all vantage points. Sitting ringside is actually not the best seat in the venue for scoring a fight.
not defending these scores because I didnt see the fight, but the overall idea that scores must be close in a close fight is just simply wrong.
Judges dont score a 12 round fight. They score (12) 3-minute stanzas. And they dont have access to previous round scores to make any alterations. So it is technically possible for a very close fight to actually be scored 120-108, assuming the winning fighter won each round by a razor thin margin.
Typically that doesnt happen, because judges are human, and if they feel they gave too many rounds one way in a close fight, they may have a tendency to give a few rounds the other way (even if the fighter clearly lost those rounds) just to "even things up a bit".
Combine that, with the completely subjective nature of judging, and there will always be someone unhappy.
But the system does need to devise a way to deal with OBVIOUSLY incompetent judges, i.e. eugina williams, adalayde byrd, etc.
Boxing is a crooked sport and so easy to throw fights
Most realize Wlad threw the Fury fight collecting some say over $50 million for his retirement fund. GGG got hosed good in Vegas with the Canelo Mex verdict. Boxing with crooked judges, desperate fighters slime like Al Haymon and greedy seedy promoters like murderer Don King and Bob cheat Arum and Oscar the weasel.
Boxings judging situation has been a farce for decades now and its become a normal part of the sport. Its gotten to the point where if Canelo is fighting and he doesnt get the K.O. you can bet on a dec win, draw or split decision loss, basically anything other than a unanimous dec loss because Golden boy comes with their own judge to every fight. Same goes for Arum with his top draws and Don King etc. Hell, Arum be robbing his fighters to make them lose belts to his other fighters to keep control. Did it wit Bradley vs Pacquiao. As well as in Horn vs Pacquiao. Than ultimately fed the game but underskilled Horn to Crawford whom Bob will try to make his next superstar cash cow. Its all politics and it will take a lot to change it.
I know this will probably get shouted down, but is there a more pragmatic solution? I’ve often felt watching from ring-side (at much smaller local bouts, I don’t get ringside at title fights!) you actually miss quite a few shots that you see clearly on video afterwards from a better vantage point. I guess what I’m saying is maybe their is a technology solution or perhaps a better location for judges to
score from? Just putting it out there for debate ...
Your idea is great and is already possible. Also software to judge fights accurately, doing everything boxstats does with the added feature of showing the force of the power shots landed can be easily created.
Problem is it is like reforming a corrupt government where the power brokers refuse to give up their authority and graph.
The judges had Postol only winning 1, 2 and 3 rounds respectively. I had Vik 6 - 2 up after 8 rounds and I'm team Taylor through and through. Hate to say it, it used to be Germany but UK boxing is where you'll find the worst cooking these days. It was the only let down of a top night.
You think the UK is worse than the US? The US is the most corrupt country in the world. In fact, there is more corruption in the US than the rest of the world combined.
