An interesting read on the subject: A View From Abroad: Inside the Minds of the "Mexicans for Golovkin"
A few quotes from the article written last year:
"[Canelo] always fights with an advantage; he's always making excuses and imposing his conditions."
"To me, what he felt was that truly a lot of people don't support him even if they are Mexican."
"Golovkin is what Mexicans want, a fighter with balls, even if he loses, Mexicans will continue to respect him more than Canelo."
"Mexicans are not too happy about the way he conducts himself in interviews, because he always answers in a defensive and dismissive way that comes out as arrogant."
"Regardless of who he may beat in the future, Canelo will always carry that stigma of having had a protected and tailor-made career. People are used to romanticizing boxing, and some of them see Canelo's career as a mere commercial enterprise. They can't fathom the idea of him fighting for honor. I don't believe this is ‘malinchismo,' it's just that some people see Mexican boxing as a sacred activity. They sympathize only with fighters who have suffered, and they perceive Canelo as arrogant and egoist because of the way his career was handled."
My guess would be that even more fans have soured since the failed PED tests causing May 5th fight to fall through. You'll always have the nationalists though & I can't really blame people rooting for their own like the following final quote:
"Personally, I think that the homeland comes first, and Canelo represents our country, just by carrying the Mexican flag into the ring he will have my support."
...but is that really a fan or just a homer? I was a huge Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire fan once upon a time too...then my eyes were opened to reality.Comment

What I find so ironic is there appear to be a limit to nationalistic fervor though. When Mexicans cheer on other Mexican fighters it's perfectly fine. Likewise, when Canadians support other Canadian fighters, it's perfectly fine or when Brits or Filipinos cheer for their own like Anthony Joshua and Manny Pacquiao it is very acceptable.
However the moment an American support their own fellow compatriot or countrymen boxer, it's taboo and is immediately construed as a form of bigotry, reverse racism and hate.
Why the hypocrisy and double standard? When these fans share the same experiences, traditions, customs and history of the fighter they are cheering on just as other nationalities do but no one ever call them reverse racists, hateful or bigots for supporting their fellow countrymen.Comment

What bothers me is when a fan turns against his own countrymen and they try to put them down. Thats weak!
For example, there's Alot of Mexican fans who hate Canelo. They call him all kinds of disrespectful names like a coward and a fake Mexican and that's not right. I'm Mexican and I always stick with my own!
I notice it's mostly the Mexicans born in Mexico that root against Canelo and call him a coward.
But you know what? Imma keep it real here. The Mexicans born in Mexico are some of the biggest cowards out there. Believe me I know!
I was born and raised in L.A so I grew up with Mexicans my whole life. And most of the Mexicans born in Mexico are weak! They be getting punked by the blacks and the Mexicans born here in the United States. I've been in the county jail and in prison and it's all politics inside lockup. You stick with your own in there. And I'll be honest here. The border brothers from Mexico are the weakest group of people in prison. They scared! They pretty much get punked by everyone in there. So for them to call Canelo a coward when I know for a fact the Mexicans born in Mexico are some of the weakest and most coward people I know tripps me out!
I love my people and I'm proud to be Mexican but I'm just keeping it real here. Mexicans born in Mexico are the biggest cowards but they wanna call Canelo a coward??
Thats fuccing pathetic!Comment
