Yes, there is a point where a few select fighters won't need a promoter anymore, but it is rare and it only happens to a select few. The problem with fighters like Spence, Garcia, Wilder is they are doing it backwards. Oscar and Mayweather showed how to do it, but fighters nowadays have no patience and no strategic long term vision for their careers. They want everything instantly without putting in the hard work. Oscar and Floyd had a promoter build there careers then after a certain point they went out on their own. Spence and Garcia expect networks, etc to hand them millions even though they have nothing to gain in doing so. Why would a promoter who works with Garcia and Spence only on a 1 fight basis make a maximum effort in marketing, advertising, and investment money knowing said fighter has 0 commitment to the promoter? No promoter is going to invest in Garcia and Spence since Garcia and Spence have 0 loyalty to the promoter. Spence and Garcia just don't understand this.

Spence does not have any independence he is chained to Al Haymon and his career has gone slower than molasses. He is almost 30 and he is still an unknown. And for Spence to say Showtime is his promoter it just shows how ignorant he is.

One would think all those fighters who are with Haymon would of taken his PBC failure as a sign to get out, but they are still sticking with him to their own detriment. None of his fighters have become stars, not one.

People can complain that Golden Boy only has one star, Canelo, but that is still one more star than Haymon has. People say that Arum has not made any stars since Paq, but at least he is making a maximum effort in trying to make Loma and Crawford stars. Haymon's fighters are still at the level they were 4 years ago and a majority of his fighters careers are in decline because of inactivity and not fighting good competition. I just do not get these Haymon fighters sticking with a manager who has got them nowhere.
Yeah you posted a great comment and may I add that it is because Haymon made Protecting Boxing Cowards (PBC) through ill gotten gains and when you do business that way it hardly prospers.....on the contrary he has cursed PBC.....he is scared to churn that ill gotten roster.....you cant reward a traitor and all those fighters (traitors) that betrayed their promoter and network are now committing mutiny on him (Haymon).....The majority of the PBC fighter just wanna hold hands and sing Kumbaya with each other....Hurd broke that crap up at 154 vs Lara and Spence can do the same at 147 vs Thurman, Danny Tropical Mexican Garcia and Broner.....Haymon got chopped at knees by Wadell and Reed lawsuit......time will tell

All about the green with this fella, I'd say Spence is after belts and legacy first before money, just look at canelo because of dlh, dodgy judges dropping belts, drug bans, catch weights he may have money but people don't respect him much anymore

It's similar to the music business.

You no longer need a major label behind you
You just need to produce something of value(songs, fights) and social media does the rest.

Spence has Haymon, Showtime, now the Dallas Cowboys behind him. That's a huge machine. Now he just needs his peers to stop running.

You can look at from many different sides! I give Spence credit for wanting to have more control over his own career so at the end of the day, he's mostly responsible for how his career pans out. A promoter's job is to advertise their product and convince consumers to by it. Haymon is really a "promoter" who fronts the money minus the product advertisement. Most fighters have a manager/adviser and a promoter which are two separate fees. Not having a promoter enables the fighter to pocket that percentage but a promoter could help drive up more sales which could also help you earn more money. Hardcore boxing fans are calling for Crawford/Spence but I don't think it would do over 200,000 buys. If each of their careers keep going as they are now, The ESPN platform will help make Crawford the bigger star of the two.

Yes, but unfortunately, when you are the biggest star with no one in sight in the rear-view mirror, people will move mountains to keep the money train going.

Not every fighter needs a promoter and sometimes a bad promoter is more a detriment than not having a promoter at all.

In regards to Oscar's comments he clearly is biased but it doesn't necessarily mean he's wrong. A good promoter can do wonders for a fighters career. It not just about promoting a fighter it's about the relationships that promoter has with other people in the business. It's not what you know but who you know right.

For example, Whyte was in a tricky situation before he secured a PPV fight with Hearn against Parker. You think Whyte, one would of been mandatory for 2 sanctioning bodies without Hearn and two could of made the Parker fight so quickly had he not already built a good working relationship with Parker and Higgins? Plus without Hearns relationship with SKY do you think this would of been PPV?

As for Spence he has Haymon to do the managerial side of things and he has Haymon's relationship with Showtime to ensure he has a platform to perform on. Question is does he want to keep doing what he is doing or become a bigger star? If he's happy just having a belt, making a few mill per fight and living in relative anonymity then he doesn't need to change a thing.

But if Spence wants to be a big star on PPV making 8 figures then Haymon alone won't be enough. Haymon's PBC project has now been established for over 3 years now and not a single fighter of his has become a genuine star.

Spence by nature is a quiet and unassuming man, not the type to grab the lime light, he'll either need a popular big name opponent to build a fan base on or he'll need a big promotional push which is lacking so far in his career. When you look at how GGG and Loma have been promoted in recent years you can literally see the difference in how their image is created in the media, Golovkin was the HBO monster at middleweight, Loma while a work in progress from the start was hyped as the new P4P king, Spence in comparison has existed in the shadows in comparison.
