Mandatories have become a joke in the sport...a fighter can seem to go forever without having to fight them. It's kinda funny how he got stripped in this situation tho. He was scheduled to fight and his opponent pulled out on short notice...hardly the time to expect him to fulfill his mandatory. Then all of the sudden the big push after the bad publicity. It needed to be done tho, cuz he clearly had no intention of facing the mandatory.

Everyone pointing the finger at GGG but none saying anything about Dev & DiBella? Look at how counterproductive their contention was. They don't get the fight against Golovkin now. That obviously would be his career high payday. He's looking at a possible match up vs Andrade or Murray? How much you think that is going to pay? Vs GGG it would at least have netted him a PPV & a few Million. Now it's all risk, basically a second eliminator & still won't see that payday on the near horizon.
He could have built upon his standing & increased his chances for the big fight by taking on a tougher challenge himself. He chose to fight the guy with 22 L's & nothing since, just another guy with no activity level unless ordered to do so with a pending deadline.
I'm all for having the next level fighters square off, but this won't change anything when the top contenders still looking for either Canelo or Golovkin. It's been only Golovkin that's even tried to unify titles at this division for years now. None of the other champs that have been mixed in have even attempted other than Lemieux. None care about that I guess. More paper champs, just what boxing needs.
Now Golovkin can take some blame here too, not by passing on the May 5th match up (one month to fight a mandatory isn't reasonable), rather he could have stayed active & fought Dev over the winter. Too much risk though with the Canelo match looming, I understand that. Bet they'd have chosen differently had they only known how this year was going to unfold.Comment

I respect the ibf for stripping him, thy are the only org that follow there own rules, but F ck me seems a bit unfair but at the same time golovkin only has himself to blameComment

Ironically, GGG got stripped of the only belt that wasn't handed to him. Lol He lost his IBF belt for not fighting his mandatory, while receiving the WBC and WBA belts from the champs not fighting him as a mandatory. But he ain't a business man?Comment

When you're at this level, sadly belts mean nothing. It's all about the payday. Belts are mostly for up-and-coming fighters, or if you just moved up/Down the div, but when you're established like GGG is, belts are honestly worthless. People will tune in to see him fight regardless of how many belts he has.Comment

Tom Loeffler, promoter for WBC, WBA, IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (38-0-1, 34 KOs), admits they were shocked by Wednesday's decision from the International Boxing Federation - who decided to strip GGG of their middleweight belt. The sanctioning body will now order the two highest ranked available contenders to collide for the vacant belt.
