hold up man
ward did NOT need ggg's name to stay relevant...wards name was always relevant in boxing...the man won the super 6....all he had to do was say he was back and get active and hes relevant...an unbeaten olympic gold medalist who on the super 6 and reigned a division will always be relevant as long as hes fighting....when ward was active he was a top 3 p4p guy before he took his break...how does a guy like that become irrelevant without a loss?
yeah ward was trying to fight a guy one division smaller(not two like brook) ...but it was one (not about 3-4 like golovkin has done and if you add trying to get cotto too thats also more)....it was one......but it was lil g himself who proclaimed 168 could get it...golovkin was using 168 as part of his campaign to get attention...and the king of 168 called him out...golovkin only ran that nonsense 168 when he knew ward was on the shelf....ward attempted to do it one time and when he couldnt get that guy he went UP! and took on a killer.....golovkin stays right where he is and drags guys up! his legacy fight is a draw against a guy with 0 wins at MW!
and ward actually went up and fought a top 5 fellow p4p not once but twice
not only that...ward took home 6.5 and 7 mil for those two fights...and to add to that ward made hbo pay him for two tuneups to the tune of close to 2 mil for each(brand and barrera)...not a bad haul for a guy that is so irrelevant huh? or you could say hbo paid ward lil g protection money to get him to 175 asap?
ward weighed 171 for his LHW fight with smith...he even allowed smith to weigh in 1 lb over...ward did so to keep his weight between 168 and 175 in the event that golovkin grew a pair and would take a fight with him
