It doesn't work that way in boxing. Going into the Stevenson fight, Bellew was an average fighter that had just taken 24 rounds to separate himself from Isaac Chilemba. He didn't become a cruiserweight champion and David Haye's daddy until years later.

Someone mentions the poor performance of a sports team and we should compare it to Canelo or Golovkin? Golovkin had less obvious opponents in his division though and when he did they really had no interest in fighting him (Martinez and Cotto)

1) no way had Golovkin done anything to step in front of Martinez money-fight with Cotto..... and Martinez had signed a deal with HBO to face Golovkin next should he get past Cotto

2) lil'G totally removed himself from the Cotto-sweepstakes when he refused to negotiate on weight with the little old faded 153lb superstar..... 6 months later Golovkin stated that he is ready willing and able to fight at 154, but nobody will step up

He ain't retired yet. Stevenson can easily rewrite the last few years over the next couple. If he beats Jack, there are a few good names and one huge one he can roll with. If he stays at the top of the division and brings in a couple more titles, he can absolutely define his career with the wins/battles he seemed to peak with Dawson.

Will he do it? eh. I am excited for the Jack fight. It is all good by me for at least a night. We will see after that.
