Michael Buffer: The UK has the Most Knowledgeable Fans in Boxing

The British guys that travel are pretty much always genuine boxing fans unless they are there to follow a specific fighter for example during the Hatton days the majority of guys who travelled were more casual based fans.

There’s too types of British fans IMO, you have the genuine boxing fans who will go to watch small hall shows or Wembley stadium because they love boxing and you have what I call the “matchroom boxing fans”, who are just there for the “event” and to get coked up and p*ssed, which is fine. I just hate it when these guys pipe up and talk nonsense about boxing. You get that nonstop at matchroom shows, the last two I was at was at were Spence-Brook and GGG-Brook and I was literally just surrounded by idiots who had the most deluded, brainwashed opinions about boxing. That’s why unless there’s a fighter I really want to see live like GGG, Spence, Linares etc I refuse to go to matchroom shows.

I’ve obviously not been anywhere near as many shows over in America but just in general the fans seem a lot more tuned in when it comes to boxing. I went over to Texas to support Liam Smith against Canelo, and with it being a stadium fight I thought it would be full of idiots but the vast majority of people I spoke to where relatively knowledgeable about boxing and even if they weren’t, they were just there to enjoy the fight and were not constantly piping up shouting utter nonsense every five minutes.

That's my biggest pet peeve with the sport. I give those fans slightly more of a pass since they are making an effort to attend the fights but I have no respect when you meet those morons online or in general and you know they wouldn't go to a fight live at all.

Have you been to any fights in LA? The Forum is great so to is the Stub Hub. Staples isn't quite as good but it's in a great area so your pre and post fight options are great.

Yeah they’re just straight up idiots... I hate those guys that talk loads of **** about boxing but never ever actually go to shows. I understand going to certain shows are expensive but I remember when I was younger and couldn’t afford flights, hotels etc so I just went to local shows in either Liverpool or Manchester, or local small hall and amateur shows.

And nah I’m yet to go to a fight in Cali, the Stub Hub looks a really good venue for boxing I’d like to go there. I was torn between going to Gonzalez-SSR 2 and GGG-Canelo but I decided to go to the latter instead.

Go and check fights that have happened at world level over the last 30 years between Brits and Yanks and see who comes out on top the vast majority of the time.

Knowledge of boxing, or like...in general?

In every way. When I talk to Americans, I feel like I lose a lot of brain cells or really have to dumb myself down.

It’s a shame because I generally find Americans to be friendly, polite and positive people to be around, but I’m usually astounded by their lack of knowledgeable on many things, it’s incredible. I don’t mean they’re unintelligent either, it’s just most Americans I know and meet seem exist in a tiny bubble.

Buffer must not be a forum member. If he read the stuff from some of the UK fans on NSB he’d realize they have many of the dumbest fans the sport has ever seen.

He should spend time reading the stuff dramashow, Tyrone biggums, junior gong, and some others.

Thats like three of four posters, that doesn't make up the UK boxing public.
