Comments Thread For: Former Footballer Rio Ferdinand Refused BBBofC Licence

Rio Ferdinand has expressed his dismay after being refused a professional boxing licence. The former England and Manchester United defender retired from football in 2015 and had planned to launch an assault on the the sport in a career change. But those plans were canned after the British Boxing Board of Control said they would not be reviewing his application following its rejection.

Was the reason why he was denied a licence mentioned? I didn't see it.

Respect to British Boxing in denying this guy who'd for sure have people watching his fights so they likely had incentive to rubber stamp him however sh^tty he looked, but I'm definitely of the overall opinion more guys should be denied license & a 39 year old guy trying to make his boxing debut doesn't seem like a great guy to allow to enter the professional boxing ranks.

They need to send guy an invite to some white collar masters division amateur boxing show.

They shouldn't refuse anyone that is fit and healthy. He's more than likely in better physical condition than the majority of people they grant licenses to, unless he has some brain damage or something unknown to us.

I wonder if part of their decision was based on the fact he fairly recently lost his wife to cancer and think he isnt of sound mind to make a clear decision to take up boxing

just a thought since no reason has been given

Didn't they grant Flintoff one though? So why not Rio? Makes little sense unless he's failed a medical. Could always apply elsewhere anyway.

Always liked him and his story seems boxing was an escape for him, hopefully he continues training, I wish him the best.

Did he have a bunch of amateur fights or anything like that?

For a 39 year old to just up and become a pro boxer with no deep amateur experience is ridiculous.

yes but they copped a load of flack for it too so at least they have learned from past mistakes no one wants to see a retired ex footballer take up pro boxing at 39

It was a documentary, they filmed him training and he was going to have 1 fight. It wasn't anything serious.
