TODAY: (Updated 7:21 p.m.) A 35-year-old man surrendered to police late this afternoon in connection with the shooting of professional boxer Antwun Echols.
James Lee Grant, of Davenport, who has a history of violence, faced warrants on charges of willful injury, going armed with intent and felon in possession of a firearm, according to police. He is in the Scott County Jail awaiting a court appearance.
Echols was shot in the leg during a dispute Sunday night in the parking lot of a Davenport business.
Grant has been convicted twice of interference with official acts causing injury and served 240 days in the Scott County Jail for a 2003 conviction, according to court records. Charges of assault while displaying a weapon and willful injury were dismissed last year, while burglary and assault charges against him were dismissed in 2000.
Echols, 35, of 1704 E. 13th St., Davenport, was treated and released following the shooting that occurred about 9 p.m. in the 400 block of East Locust Street. He appeared in Scott County District Court this morning on a misdemeanor drug possession charge. Police say he had a small bag of crack ******* on him when police arrived. He also had four outstanding warrants for failure to pay child support.
Steven Lee Hodges, 34, of 625 LeClaire St., Davenport, who police say was fighting with Grant when Echols intervened and was shot, is also charged with misdemeanor drug possession and disorderly conduct for fighting.
EARLIER STORY: (Updated 1:33 p.m.) Davenport police issued an update on the shooting incident involving Antwun Echols early this afternoon.
James Lee Grant, 35, of Davenport has been identified as the suspect in the shooting, according to a news release issued by Capt. David Struckman. Warrants naming Grant have been issued for willful injury, going armed with intent and felon in possession of a firearm.
In addition, the release states that Antwun Echols was taken into custody after he was treated for a gunshot wound to the leg. He was charged with possession of a controlled substance (crack *******), and he was arrested on four outstanding warrants from Scott County for child support issues.
Stevie Hodges was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance (crack *******) and disorderly conduct in connection with his participation in the original fight.
EARLIER STORY: (Updated 12:17 p.m.) Professional boxer Antwun Echols was treated for a gunshot wound late Sunday night after an altercation in a Davenport grocery store parking lot.
Police responded to a call at the Save-A-Lot store, 405 E. Locust St., shortly after 9 p.m. According to Davenport police, they found Echols, 35, who was shot in the leg and a second man who had been knocked unconscious and repeatedly kicked. That man was identified as Stevie Hodges, 34.
Capt. David Struckman said the two men were in the parking lot when they got into an argument with another man that turned physical. Echols approached the man after the man knocked Hodges to the ground and started kicking him. When Echols told the man to stop, the man pulled a gun out of his pants and shot Echols in the leg, Struckman said.
A warrant has been issued for a 35-year-old man who is wanted on charges of willful injury, going armed with intent and felon in possession of a firearm. The suspect’s name has not yet been released.
Echols was taken to Genesis Medical Center, East Rusholme Street, for treatment. He later was released.
Meantime, police also charged both Echols and Hodges. Both men face misdemeanor drug possession charges. Struckman said both possessed bags of crack *******. Echols also was arrested on a charge of failure to make child support payments, a misdemeanor, and Hodges was charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct.
This is not the first time Echols has been involved in a shooting. In 2003, he was treated and released after being struck in the armpit by a bullet during a drive-by shooting in Davenport. Less than a month after that incident, Echols was arrested in Rock Island for being in possession of a handgun.
Echols last won a professional fight on Dec. 12, 2004. His most recent fight was a loss to Fulgencio Zuniga on June 23, and he has lost twice with two draws in his most recent four fights.Comment

I don't know that he won against Taylor but he didn't really lose to him either as both of those fights were about draws (which was why Hatton, rather than Taylor won FOTY that year). It wasn't until Calzaghe that I felt like I saw him get beat. And in between those bouts was Winky and Tarver. Hopkins humbled a lot of boxers.
He was 43 when he fought Calzaghe! That is what I loved about B Hop was that he made me feel young.Last edited by SAINTSTEVE; 05-04-2018, 07:53 AM.Comment

Fighting blown up WWs, overrated SMW and LHWs, and a bunch of never-was no-hopers. Yawn. Best career wins were WW Tito and Tarver. Let that sink in.Comment

Echols' arrest came 11 days after he was shot in the armpit while walking to a friend's house in Davenport, Iowa. He was not seriously injured. Police said they didn't know if Echols was targeted or was a random victim.
(JULY 29) YOU'D think having a .38 bullet embedded in his left armpit might tend to slow the heavy punches of American slugger Antwun Echols. But he says the few grams of lead lodged in his torso in a murder attempt on May 21 will only add steel to the backbone of the biggest ****er in the super-middleweight division. "Echols's recovery from the wound has amazed doctors, and the boxer known as "Kid Dynamite" says his left arm is stronger than it was before it was hit by the bullet."

now let me crush your crap posts with two lines -
Echols win ratio before injury - 79% (including 2 elite and several world class bouts)
Echols win ratio after injury - 20% (zero elite bouts, 2 world class bouts)
which remains me to ask - are you ****** enough to still reply in the face of overwhelming evidence?Last edited by DreamFighter; 05-04-2018, 01:42 PM.Comment
