That isn't what is going on here.

Say I am a writer.

Someone offers me a $10,000 advance to write a book on fanboys.

They don't tell me when it is due, exactly what they want out of this book, or how long they expect it to be.

I now have three options- I can say yes, I can say no, or I can say I need more money than that.

If I "agree in principle", that is the only option of those three where I get to meet with the publisher and hash out details.

If I later find out they won't let me include a chapter on Robbie, the biggest fanboy of them all, I then have the right to walk away citing artistic differences.
