  • Comments Thread For: Eleider Alvarez, Trainer Confident They Will Shock Sergey Kovalev

Light heavyweight contender Eleider Alvarez (23-0, 11 KOs) is smiling from ear to ear after finalizing a deal to fight WBO world champion Sergey Kovalev (32-2, 28 KOs) on a date in July. Alvarez has been the mandatory challenger to WBC champion Adonis Stevenson since 2015, but for one reason or another they were never able to get together in the ring. Stevenson is coming back on May 19 against Badou Jack in Montreal.

I'm happy for Kovalev. He'll get to add another top 5 LHW scalp to his resume as he continues to hunt for the Bivol unification.

This is a better match than the Browne fight, although it may not be as explosive. From what I have seen (I have never sat all the way through an Eledier Alvarez fight) he is a really decent technical fighter, but I have seen only hints of power. I think Kovalev has fought smarter with his new trainer, and his power is still really top shelf.

I still am thinking Bivol will beat Kovalev, but Kovalev should have more than enough to handle Alvarez which will absolutely help with brewing the Bivol unification like you said. When they fight, I hope they each get a good payday out of it. Needs more headlines to get to that level. This is a good step.

I hope this gets Kovalev closer to a Bivol or Beterbiev fight as well. Alvarez is tricky enough to make Kovalev have to work for it, so it should be a solid fight.

If anyone thinks Alvarez will win they need to watch his fight with Chilemba. I bet on him to beat Chilmba on points but he lost that fight pretty clearly.

Anyone is beatable... specially on tape! Eleider has talent but not enough power to keep Kolavev honest. Thus... Krusher by UD or maybe even late KO.

Alvarez will try his best but I expect a late KO from Kovalev.
