Francisco 'Bandido' Vargas looked good tonight!
I thought he was done after his loss to Berchelt. After which he had surgery to remove the scar tissue from over both eyes. He also changed trainers, switching from Guillermo "El Sargento" Becerril, who had trained him from the start of his pro career, to Joel Diaz.
Losing the title was bad enough but Vargas also suffered a cut under his right eye, another over his left eye and a third laceration on the bridge of his nose. He was also cut around the eyes in both the Miura and Salido battles. A bleeder who leads with his face kinda reminds me of Arturo Gatti.
Both fight's (Takashi Miura and Orlando Salido) were fight of the year candidates the first was Vargas' ninth-round TKO of Takashi Miura in 2015 to take the WBC junior lightweight title. Then came a 12-round draw with Orlando Salido in 2016. Those fights cost Vargas quite a lot of damage.
It was nice to see he suffered no cuts tonight!
