Loeffler and every media outlet has been reporting that regardless who the opponent is it will remain a PPV. HBO is not paying for this or moving it to a HBO regular telecast. If you move the date and get a better opponent probably could be a regular HBO broadcast. But adding another PPV flop on GGG ledger just to keep a date that has no significance to a Kazakastan fighter shows once again how out of his league Loeffler is.

It's a bad move, to be sure. Now they just seem to be all about the money, which they won't get with a "b" list opponent.

The money is likely part of it, Derevyenchenko or whoever won't fight for free. And for sure, sticking with May 5 no longer really works, all a bit of a train wreck.

Couldn't Canelo have fought in California if his problem is with the Nevada SAC ? I guess California might have their own issues with the positive tests, so probably not.

Suspensions by one athletic commission are generally respect by all other US athletic commissions (a but more in flux on Indian reservations, tbh).

I can't imagine California wanting to sanction that fight and not look super sketchy in the process. It would look bad on them for turning their cheek to a positive test so quickly after the scandal. Loeffler and the team need to give a decent amount to somebody respectable that even on a short notice fight, if they lose, they still get paid decently. Giving some complete no-hoper good change pisses me off. I realize the money has to come from somewhere and some of the guys have problems with pricing themselves out, but there's always a number.

What would you guys say about Rob Brant as an opponent? I guess that would be respectable? SURELY better than poor Munguia.

Rob Brant at least fought in the 168lb WBSS tournament, so no one can say that Golovkin is again picking on smaller fighters.

How good Brant actually is is unknown.

Kind of stinks for boxing. Golovkin is taking heat for trying to find an opponent on last minute's notice when the guy really to blame is the one that couldn't pass a VADA test. I think you're right, it outsells any alternative AND it's just a treat to see Golvokin box in person.

Still likely outsells any alternative on May 5th on short notice.
