Bone density and muscle mass. But overall, just like a good, strong punch, you either have it or you don't. You're born with it.
Factors contributing to weak chin or strong chin

I think it has more to do with technique. I'll bet most people thought Paul Williams had a strong chin until it got cracked by Martinez. Hatton was just a KO waiting to happen because his defense was so poor. Every time Khan got stopped it made sense because each time he had no idea the punches were coming. Who would've thought Ward would be able to put a dent in Kovalev's chin? If you look at how lazy he was being at the time he got caught, and the fact that Ward put so much power behind that punch, it's easy to see how he got rocked. There are some boxers that it's hard to KO, even when they get hit with solid punches. It think that's a unique ability to brace themselves in a split second to absorb those shots. Or maybe some genetic make up that prevent their brains from shutting down like a normal person when they get hit.Comment

Good question, I don't think there is enough science out there to really give a clear cut answer.
Women have thicker skulls than men. Can they take a shot better? Sometimes I feel like they do because you see some women take big hits and keep standing, were the man drops like a sack of potatoes...
But science says that it's all about your brain shaking inside your skull.
I think it has a lot to do with your neck strength, because the stronger your neck is the less your head will move as you brace yourself for impact. And it is all about seeing the shot, because you will not be holding your head as still as possible at all times when boxing.
Shots I've been hurt with were the ones I didn't see, and they weren't even that hard, a light uppercut lit me up once, where a straight hand that I saw incoming that was a much harder shot didn't do anything because I saw it, flexed my traps/neck and just took it on.
Someone mentioned neck size with strength and that is absolute nonsense. Muscle size, and muscle strength do not have to be related. Anyone even went to a gym will know that big muscles doesn't equal big strength and vice versa.
Once you go down, key thing is conditioning and strength in your lower body. When you are down you need to get up, and your legs feel like noodles, safe bet that if you have powerful legs it will be easier to get up, vs say you never done a squat in your life.Comment

Bone density seems to help also your neck people born with short necks can take a better punch compared to guys with long skinny necks. Also having tree trunk legs seems to help too. So basically it's genetics the others such as neck strengthen can help but it's genetics mostly . Todays boxers also take steroids to take better shots and use IV cleanse to mask it or they say the meat, or they use undetectable roids like the clear as Mosley did or use Angel HerdiaComment
