  • Boxing Fundamentals....Are They A Must?

The term boxing fundamental is often used
Most fans and trainers alike view this as a must in a fighters boxing knowledge

    Yet Deontay Wilder???
    Explain him

He is proving over and over you can be on top in this sport with a severe lack of boxing fundamentals

He has boxing purists going mental

What is your view on this?

Athletic ability.......... Fundamentals can only take you so far if you don't have the athletic ability that you can't learn.

His lack of fundamentals almost cost him against Ortiz.

They matter a lot less at the higher weights where size and athleticism can overrule them and 1 punch means anything is possible.

Well he could be better if he had fundamentals.

Yes. Most people aren't 6'6 giants so Wilder can get away with not being the most fundamental at that weight class with his natural gifts.

When you're talking about the range and size of the average human being 5'6 - 6'0 so lightweights to super middle weights basically everyone in the world the skill barrier becomes that much higher simply because there's more competition than what a 6'6 heavyweight has to see.

Not to say athleticism is the end all, but I could see it taking you further if you were a giant compared to being an average sized person (Which still has freak athletes thrown in there even at smaller size).

The bigger you are, the harder you can punch, the less boxing fundamentals you need to be successful in the ring.

We see the bigger thing every day. The smaller guys are the more boxing fundamentally strong cuz they seem to need it, on average more, to reach the top. There are outliers (Naz comes to mind, although he had the power advantage which helped him get away with that), but on average the lower your weight the more stronger your boxing basics need to be all else being, in theory, equal.

And the power thing, which tends to be more of a thing the higher you get up in weight, tends to equal out advantages with boxing fundamentals real quick at times. So the biggest guys, with bigger firepower, can get away with being lesser talents in the classic sense of what being a skilled boxer looks like.

Wilder is just among the most extreme on both sides of this which has helped him get as far as he's gotten with a undefeated record thus far.

Go see him in a gym, you'll see good fundamentals.

Go see him when he's trying to knock someone out and you won't see them at all.
