exactly. Could have gone either way, like the ref calling pacquiao knocked down against Cotto (I think it was the Cotto fight...)

The glove doesnt have to touch the canvas for it to be a kd.

... of course it was a KD... by definition...
          ... but Jr "recovered" instantly...

He ate a little left just before his knee touch the canvas but I wouldn’t call it a KD, it was more to do with him off balance. He definitely is blessed with a great chin. Because anyone else would have being knock tha fuck out with the punches that only stunned him.

if groves did not try to fight like Mayweather he would have knocked Jr down more times maybe KO him. with the blood pouring out of jr's eye groves did not even throw left hooks. he would not really commit to his punches. Jr swinging wildly like a drunk in a bar holding behind groves head landing uppercuts. In 15 years I can see the two eubanks as circus con men selling tickets to see the 500 lb woman with 3 heads

The Rules for a knockdown from Association of Boxing Commissions.

Here are the rules as quoted from Referee rules and guidelines: The Bold Part tells us what we need to know. It does not appear to matter if his glove touched or not, because his knee sure did!

                    Knockdown
An official knockdown is ruled in boxing when a fighter is punched and:

                    a) a part of his/her body other than the feet touch the canvas (such as his butt or glove)

                    b) when a fighter is being held up by the ropes (i.e. the fighter would have fallen had the ropes not been there)

                    c) when a fighter is hanging on, through or over the ropes and

                    d) cannot protect himself and, for whatever reason, is lodged on a position where he can't fall

A slip or fall to the canvas by a boxer, resulting in any of the above conditions, is not a knockdown.

Note: The Association of Boxing Commissions Referee Rules and Guidelines state: "Before a bout can resume after a boxer has been knocked down, fallen or slipped to the floor of the ring, the Referee shall wipe his gloves." The referee wipes the gloves on his shirt to remove any dirt or debris that might have gotten on the fighter's gloves from the canvas.

It was a KD. From where the ref was standing, i can see why he didn't see the knee touch and didn't call it.
