    Andrew Ward was seen as boring because he had a boring boxing style which rarely produced exciting fights and generally involved spoiling the his opponents work. If you're a boring fighter you could make the argument that you need a big personality to bring the crowds in. It isn't just because he didn't act like enough of a d*ck.

    Look at Manny Pacquiao. He gathered a huge following in the US, and he wasn't even American. He didn't need to "talk too much" (to use your phrase) to do that. He let his fists do the talking and always took difficult and compelling fights.
