  • Comments Thread For: Mikey Garcia Discusses Belts, Lomachenko, Linares, Going To 147

By Lyle Fitzsimmons - It's not hard to find a boxing fan or media member who'll suggest -- in an era where superstars and promoters tend to pick and choose their fights -- that title belts no longer matter. Mikey Garcia disagrees. Already a champ in three weight classes -- and the WBC's incumbent at lightweight -- the newly minted 30-year-old will aim for yet another bauble in March when he challenges Sergey Lipinets for the IBF's share of 140-pound supremacy...

    Loma doesnt have that body to become a 140 pounder, his waist is already as wide as his shoulders and he has a very short reach, doesnt have the potential do grow bigger as he's already thick;
fight between Lipinets and Garcia will be a really bloodybath, Lipinets cuts himself easily but at the same time hits hard, probably breaks Garcia's nose

"(Golden Boy president) Eric Gomez told me that fight should be on a big show at a different time of the year, not in January," Garcia said.

"(Gomez) suggested we wait, we could make more money and build the fight even more. That's why we decided to take an intermediate fight. (Linares) ended up fighting Mercito Gesta. You've got to take on fights like this sometimes to lead up to something bigger. Now (Gomez is) looking at Linares and Lomachenko. That's great for him. That's what they want to do. I thought we were going to get it done in the summer, but it seems like they're probably going to beat me to it. - Mikey Garcia
There are some inconsistencies with Mikey's account of events with GoldenBoy President Eric Gomez version of the story.

President of Golden Boy advised BoxingScene.com on Wednesday afternoon - "Ultimately Mikey passed on the fight. He's going to take another offer that he has. He had another fight in late January. So he's going to take that."

Word is that Garcia could be facing IBF titlist, Robert Easter. Gomez says that Garcia never specified what his plans are.

"He just said he had a huge offer to fight January 27th."

Gomez admitted, "I'm a little surprised because he told me he wanted Linares, that was his priority. So we made him a great offer, an incredible offer. No options, he went on the record and said he didn't want to do options, 'why not just do a one-off?' So we gave him that but he didn't want the fight."

The offer made to Golden Boy for the Linares fight was a 50-50 financial split and whichever network bid highest on the fight would televise it.

"HBO was interested and made an offer, I relayed that information and told him, 'Look, if you're comfortable with Showtime and Showtime's willing to pay more money, we have no problem,''' Gomez stated,

Now that I remember, Easter was on the table and Robert put Mikey on blast for passing on him, yep I remember the forum had threads about that fight. Then Mikey passed on Easter as well lol! but damn Mikey says Lomachenko beat him to Linares doe!

But anyways, the ball is on Linares court ; if he wants the fight with Mikey its not certain given Mikeys ways, but at the same time if he ( Jorge ) passes on Mikey to fight Lomo it kind of lets Mikey off the hook -- Garcia can say Linares didnt want it! you see! I wanted the fight all along! even though I passed on offers and been fighting at 140, requesting special permission by the WBC so that they didnt strip me! Now that Easter looked like **** against Fortuna I think I want that fight now!

I just got off the phone with Mikey. He told me he is looking forward to fighting the GGG vs Canelo winner.

The same Eric Gomez that has already admitted under oath that he lies to the media, plants bogus stories, participates in smear campaigns, etc.

If Fortuna ****ed him up, Mikey would destroy him. Lol nice try but Easter better chase that Fortuna rematch or he is ducking him. Fortuna said he would go to Easter's home town and this time do him in. We all know those judges saved Easter from his first loss. Fortuna tagged him all night. I expected better from Easter we both know he truly lost. Of course you won't admit that.

Sure can. Even if he can't, I can supply him with mine. I was at the bowling alley earlier and got a WBC Diamond Belt out of one of them claw machines. I was going for a papa Smurf doll, but that cheap a$$ belt was in the way.

I don't have a problem with Garcia moving up and down in weights as long as it's for meaningful fights.

Garcia v Loma is potentially one of the most exciting fights that could be made. Huge. But it sounds like Garcia's body is growing and he is just simply not going to make 135 eventually.

Loma I cannot see going higher than 140 due to his size even though he is 5''7' with 65 and 1/2 reach. The guys at 147 are huge, and even though Loma could repeat the exploits and defy the odds like Pacman did, Pac was able to carry his power with him up the ranks. Loma doesn't compare to Pac in terms of power, which means moving up entails taking more punishment, taller, bigger opponents and a higher work rate.

Then again who knows? If Loma moves between 135-140, then there's plenty of gret fights to be made.
