They bought time on NBC to prove that boxing on network TV could generate millions of viewers. It did generate millions of viewers. NBC was uninterested in paying for shows, so they shifted their focus to FOX and CBS. Until the UFC TV deal is finalized, FOX isn't going to make a big commitment to boxing.
It was easier for non-Haymon fighters to get on Showtime before PBC and Showtime wasn't paying nearly as much money for boxing back then either. Showtime has had to substantially increase their budget, and substantially increase the control they've given to Haymon, in order to remain the primary outlet for his top fighters.
They way I remember it, Haymon fighters fought on Showtime well before PBC's creation. So essentially you are fellating Al Haymon for giving the stable of boxers he manages a promotional name of "Premier Boxing Champions".
