  • Comments Thread For: Thurman Not Expected to Fight Vargas in May 19 Return to Ring

NEW YORK Jessie Vargas wasn't part of Showtime's "2018 Boxing Upfront" for good reason Wednesday. Despite rampant speculation over the past month, BoxingScene.com has learned Vargas will not be Keith Thurman's opponent for Thurman's comeback bout from elbow surgery. Vargas, a former WBO welterweight champion, has openly discussed his willingness to challenge Thurman for his WBA and WBC 147-pound championships, but that assignment will go to an opponent to be determined.

This means Vargas, Porter, and Danny could be up for offering to Spence. I hate the IBF lol

I really hope Ocampo's team is smart and steps aside like Ponomarev

That's what I was betting on. If odds right if not taken the over.

Maybe... he goes right to Shawn Porter to get it over with.

No it doesn't. It doesn't mean that at all. First off the IBF doesn't allow step aside deals. Ponamarev just gave up his spot completely. Second, Porter already said he would just sit out and wait for his mandatory against Thurman. Third Danny will be the next mandatory if he beats Rios. Fourth, Jessie Vargas is not going to go fight Errol Spence in his backyard in Dallas. Even if Ocampo drops his ranking with IBF, Spence would have to fight the next rated contender.

What this means is Spence will fight a showcase fight which we already knew and that Jessie Vargas will be on the shelf at least 7 months. He got a tune up to shake the rust off but now the rust will be back on. smh. The earliest the next Showtime date will be available is in July if they even do a card that month

Thurman has made me a fan to a non-fan quicker than anyone since Ward. Its like these guys are trying to f#ck up their trajectory & high water mark in the game.

At the pace he's going once Thurman loses his title I'll give no f#cks about what he does & I can't say I give much of a f#ck now outside of him fighting & losing to Spence so he'll be out of the way of stopping the big fight in the division. And maybe most importantly so he'll be out of play for future potential big fights vs Crawford or others who come along as he'll be saying nah can't fight Bud in 2020 if he were to beat Spence in 2019 I bet.

                    F#cking flute playing mfer!
