    EDIT: missed the supermiddleweight division. Adding Truax and Benavidez, USA actually has the most champions (12).

    japan has currently 10 champions and shares with the USA the #1 spot for the country with the most champions.

    ogawa, iwasa, inoue, higa, kimura, taguchi (unified), shiro, tanaka, kyoguchi, yamanaka.

    USA also has 10, actually 11 if we still count crawford as a champ.

    wilder, charlo, hurd, ali, thurman (unified), spence, garcia, easter jr., russel jr., magdaleno, (crawford).

    Russia has 6, UK is down to 5, Mexiko 5, Thailand 3, philippines 2, ukraine 2.

    Also kazachstan, venezuela, Latvia, new zealand, australia, cuba, puerto rico and south africa each have one champion. In tota 17 different countries.

    6 titles are vacant right now.

      I wonder if it has anything to do with how globalized the sport is now

        Not exactly sure, but i think one factor is that Japans boxing comission allowed their fighter to challenge for the WBO and IBF title.
        At one point, they were only allowed to fight for the WBC and WBA.

        Now japanese fighters have more opportunity to fight for word titles and they are often in direct competition to mexican fighters, because both countries have many good fighters in those lower divisions.

        I just checked my excelsheet, I forgot about the supermiddleweight division.
