Comments Thread For: Promoter: Alvarez Won 3 Final Eliminators, No 4th With Gvozdyk!

Earlier, BoxingScene.com's Steve Kim first reported that Eleider Alvarez has decided not to participate in Friday's WBC purse bid for a fight against Oleksandr Gvozdyk. The World Boxing Council had recently issued an order, where they approved Adonis Stevenson's request to defend his world title against Badou Jack. And, they also ordered a final eliminator between Alvarez and Gvozdyk. The winners of the two contests would then have to face one another.

Alvarez shouldve sued awhile back. I can imagine, if the WBC drops him from his rank, that Michel & co will sue.

Having said that, why agree to a step aside fee and initially agreeing to be on the undercard?

alvarez the undisputed king of eliminators. I support this move he already earned his shot at the champ. he should get the winner of jack-adonis with no issues.

He kept on taking step aside money. It is his fault for accepting those!

You can't duck an eliminator and still be the mandatory. This is Al Haymon's mess, you can't punish Gvozdyk even more than he already has been for it. He's already what, 32? And he never stepped aside. Stevenson-Jack winner MUST fight Gvozdyk next. If Alvarez wanted anything different, he should have fought Gvozdyk, or not stepped aside in the past. He signed with an adviser who doesn't care about him, only cares about Stevenson, and this is what happens. I feel bad for him, but you can't punish Gvozdyk for it. Alvarez should get the winner of Stevenson/Jack vs Gvozdyk. In no universe should he jump Gvozdyk's spot after pulling out the purse bid. That's unheard of.

Beterbiev could face Gvozdyk (He is promoted by Top Rank and Beterbiev was on one of their last cards, you would think he would go after the WBO title Kovalev has). Alvarez should still get the winner of Stevenson vs. Jack. No one seems to want to face Beterbiev, You don't even hear about an eliminator for his title.

Gvozdyk turned 30 and will turn 31 this april. He's young and still has some years left.

That's not how it works. He had his chance many times and stepped aside. Now Yvon is saying he never got paid to step aside? Are you serious? Then why did he step aside? What a mess. What terrible advice he took. He held up the WBC rankings, and held Gvozdyk's career back for years. Eventually it got so bad that the WBC stepped in with this solution, that Alvarez and Gvozdyk fight for the right to face the winner of Stevenson/Jack. Now, Alvarez pulled out, so he lost his spot. That's how it works. Gvozdyk is either next in line, or he will fight the next contender after Alvarez for the right to fight Stevenson/Jack winner. Alvarez will get the winner of that if he's lucky. He has no one to blame but his team if he stepped aside without getting paid.

Is Alvarez in need of special help? You can't turn down your title shot and expect to sit on top of the #1 contender spot indefinitely.

The problem is Alvarez knows he's going to lose to the Nail and now regrets forgoing his title opportunity.

It's just damning how they held up the rankings when Gvozdyk is the fighter that is the most deserved to get that title shot!
