Yes Stevenson had to go to showtime to fight Hopkins as HBO had made it clear they were not interested in that fight happening on HBO. But it doesn't change the fact Stevenson had a chance to fight Kovalev and chose Hopkins instead, which to be fair at the time was understandable but disappointing.

Though when Stevenson did jump ship to Showtime he had not even approached Hopkins about a fight, it had been talked about but no offers had been made, unlike with Kovalev where they had pretty much agreed to fight. So he was leaving HBO and a guaranteed fight with Kovalev to Showtime with nothing other than the possibility of a fight with Hopkins.

Also it doesn't change the fact that Hopkins was getting messed around in the Stevenson negotiations. They dragged it out, changed Hopkins guarantee, changed dates, failed to commit to anything. On the flip side the HBO deal for Kovalev was done very quickly.

Haymon tried to be too smart and force Hopkins to vacate so he could then lower Hopkins purse and get one of his fighters a shot at the vacant belt. Haymon knew no network wanted to air Hopkins vs his mandatory and Hopkins at his age had no time to waste on mandatory fights that brought no money.

    2014 Copy/Paste

First thing first, Hopkins lied about the Thomas Williams IBF story, and also lied about the phone call he never received from Stevenson clan. He deliberately insisted to inflate his purse, with the consequences of disrupting the negotiations between him and Adonis Stevenson. Which is a clear proof of how he has already made an agreement with Kathy Duva.
The issue is, in July Bernard Hopkins suddently requested to be paid 5 millions (70%) for the unification against Adonis Stevenson.
But the original deal was for (50%) 3.5 millions each contenders.
Rejecting the idea of being paid 3.5 millions (50%), Hopkins decided to agree a reduced (70%) deal with Kovalev.
    That (70%) is 2 millions, which give Kovalev (30%) 650 000$...

The Question is WHY would you reject a 3.5 millions deal against X, and agree for a 2 millions deal against Y.

That's the way it surprised me. But from a boxing perspective it's part of the business. he wanted to take on Kovalev and I don't fault him for that. If he wants the Kovalev fight, then at this stage of his career he has a handful of fights left, if that, and if he wants to prioritize that fight I'm not going to hold it against him," Espinoza told BoxingScene.com.
I believe Hopkins saw more flaws in Kovalev's game than in Stevenson, which he could exploited.
But the main reason is the business/beneficial way to compile money.
You see, Stevenson always wanted to fight both (Hopkins & Kovalev), but he wanted to follow an order to generate more money.
Since Stevenson got under Showtime, his new plan was to have a megafight with Hopkins for 3.5 millions pulling the Undisputed Champion title, and closing the lite Heavyweight loop with the most anticipated boxing FANBASE fight between him and Kovalev for MUCH MORE.
But Hopkins understood Stevenson path to racks more money, and decide to pick his plan, by pursuing Kovalev before closing the circle with Stevenson.
Which mean he got a deal with Stevenson, but swap network, fix a 2 millions deal with Kovalev, believing he'll pull out a victory; and close the lite Heavyweight loop with the most honorable way to complete the chapter of his legacy, by TRYING to defeat the man who beat the man, for more than 5 millions.
But the main trigger begins when Kathy Duva created her lawsuit scam, to plot a settlement under table with Golden Boy for dropping this phony lawsuit in exchange of an unification bout between Hopkins and her protege Kovalev, and thus make Stevenson-Michel-Haymon stumble in the process.
Which is the reason why this Lawsuit got dropped the day after Hopkins and Kovalev reached an agreement to unify their titles. Golden Boy team weren't bright enough to realise this lawsuit was going nowhere, otherwise HBO would have backed up this phony complaint. But Golden Boy have taken the bait, due to the fact they also needed an excuse to reconnect with HBO.

So when Hopkins says he checkmate Stevenson, it's a designed figure of speech to show how he outguess Stevenson's plans, to stack more money than Stevenson would have done if the plan would have still been under Stevenson's control. By believing he was clever, Hopkins prostrated before Witch Duva. In reality, it wasn't a checkmate at all against Stevenson, he cheated. But the worst part about this, it's Kathy Duva who outplayed Hopkins with a Royal flush.

The logic of this story is that Stevenson will unify all the major titles, but instead of doing it in 2 gainful fights, Hopkins has tampered the cards so that Stevenson is left with only one lucrative meaningful fight.
But Adonis Stevenson message was and still remain the same, he wants to become the Undisputed champion of this division.
So his target will remain the same; and no one will hold him back to reach his goal.

I was thinking, who is Golden Boy trying to pressure Adonis into fighting? They don't have any Light Heavies, or 168 guys that want to move up, that I know of...apparently this is just B-Hop acting on his own, possibly looking for one last fight.

Yeah, once B-Hop's middleweight title reign was over, he made it a point to fight some big name opposition.

At about that time was when he adopted his new safety first approach, 2:30 starring, 6 punches a round 😂...but you gotta give him credit for not ducking anyone!

that was loma first 7 figure check.

broner has made that for years. so has danny
