The would never had this much recognition had not for Roman

All these guys are getting the limelight at the lowerweights, but they were never really much cared for the fans, until Roman Gonzalez accomplished what genuine greats did and entertained people so much with his style. He is basically the most recent genuine lowerweight great, and had him topping off as a top 3 Lowerweight great.

With names such as Niida, Takayama, Yaegeshi, Fuentes, Estrada, Cuadras, Viloria, Arroyo, Rungvisai IMO, Hirales, Rodriguez.

Had it not for him, they would never had this much people anticipating their every decision.

Good posts. Suck that Roman is shot at aged 30. I hope he wins a fight, and retire.

I got to agree with this. He did for the really small weight what Naz had done for the featherweights, albeit with different methods.

All of a sudden, most boxing fans know who Estrada, Cuadras and Rungvisai are, along with a few others. Most wouldn't even have been able to recognise Estrada 5 years ago lol

But roman has gone the way of most small fighters and looks to be at an end at 30. That's not unusual for the really small guys.

Its like that with any divison. Divison die out, and come back to life all the time.

He did go up in weight, but he's also shot. There was an article ~2 years ago from someone talking about how little guys with high punch output have really really short primes. He predicted that Roman would be done before 30.

that's how it used to be for virtually all of the little fighters. they'd get matched tough early to make money and to maximize their potential, which would wane quicker than a larger body naturally, as well as due to the punishment. tiny little guys may very well be at their physical peak by 20-22 years old, we have seen it in the past. HW of that age look like boys when they fight 30 year old HW, a division where guys peak later and where they're matched more carefully because of the punching power and the money that can be made.

joshua's opponents have been getting 5-10 million bucks. for a little perspective, i doubt gonzalez made that in his entire career.

dude donaire was in his 4th or 5th weight class by the time he got planked by walters, and had been fighting the best since '07 when he beat darchinyan, who was on the p4p list at the time.

losing to a prime rigondeaux is also nothing to be ashamed of. that guy was one of the best counterpunchers in the sport at the time. maybe the very best not named floyd mayweather. and styles make fights. donaire had no jab and no answer if he couldn't land bombs.
