My opinion is that maybe he thought he would not get AJ.

If Ortiz fought Joshua first and won or even gave him a hard time, Wilder likely wouldn't want any. Right now, Deontay feels confident. He may even think a decisive win over Ortiz gives him even more negotiating power with a fight vs AJ. Well, the same holds true for Luis if he destroys Wilder and takes his belt.
He'll have to fight a rematch with Wilder and he won't have a guarantee to fight Joshua. He walked away from a guaranteed fight with Joshua. To fight Wilder and maybe get a Joshua fight at least a year down the road if he wins. ****** move if you ask me.

Do you know that there is a rematch clause in the Wilder vs Ortiz deal? Also, if Ortiz starches Wilder, do you think he'll exercise a rematch clause?

It's standard to have a rematch clause for a voluntary defence. You should know this.

It may be standard, but not required. Golovkin didn't have one against Canelo, though Canelo had one. Again, if Ortiz destroys Wilder, who's to say that Deontay will want a rematch?
