Eddie Hearn has admitted that he overpaid IBF holder Charles Martin when bringing the then-undefeated American over to the UK in May 2016 to defend his belt against Anthony Joshua (20-0, 20 KOs). Hearn has told the The Mirror that they took an educated gamble in order to get “AJ” on the world title trail after Tyson Fury’s self-imposed sabbatical and subsequent battle against the UKAD led to the fragmentation of the titles that he won by beating Wladimir Klitschko on points in November 2015.

2018 is gonna be another huge year for boxing..an undisputed heavyweight champion is going to be crowned.. something tells me its gonna be Anthony Joshua..fury down line 2019 will be enormous! p.s:its gonna be a big year for hearn,sky sports and his fighters too

Nothing at all wrong with what Hearn did. In fact, boxing followers should breathe a sigh of relief that a credible champion got that belt away from CM as soon as possible. The alternative was to watch Martin defend it for as long as poss against ****ty names in front of ****ty crowds for ****ty money.
We have a great heavyweight scene now. It could be improved by Wilder fighting some decent names but credit where it is due - if he takes on Ortiz next Wilder gets that credit.
I'm a Brit and would like to see a big unification next year but let's be honest, as unorthodox as Wilder is he is dangerous and confident - although he seems to be afraid to take on Whyte (I think he's been offered $3M), but that point is moot if he fights Ortiz anyway, same danger imho.

Eddie Hearn has insisted he will refuse to promise Deontay Wilder a shot at Anthony Joshua should he fight Dillian Whyte. Wilder said earlier in the week that he would be happy to fight Whyte, should a clause be included in the contract that guaranteed. Hearn believes fighting Whyte would give Wilder the chance to raise his profile in the UK, which would in turn create more interest in a potential bout with Joshua.

But, speaking after Joshua stopped Carlos Takam in Cardiff, Hearn dismissed the idea a fight contract with Whyte would include a Joshua clause. �No, it doesn�t work that way,� said Hearn when asked if Wilder would get a guarantee to fight Joshua.

Because putting Joshua on the contract is an unrealistic demand? You can't have a Joshua fight on the contract, until you've negotiated a Joshua fight and Wilder wants 50% for a Joshua fight. Pricing himself out.

Hearn isn't wrong. I guess the only way it could be done is if they agreed terms for the Joshua fight before he fought Whyte, thus using the Whyte fight just to raise Wilder's profile in the UK. But it's already clear that negotiations for AJ v Wilder are going to be difficult.

How can you just write in a contract a guarantee that Wilder gets AJ afterwards? you would still then have to go through the process of negotiations anyway after he beat Whyte. If they cannot come to an agreement, yet it's legally bound that he gets a fight with AJ, both would be caught up in a massive legal dispute with no real resolution if they can't agree terms to fight.

Hearn is right, it really cannot work that way. No lawyer in the world worth his salt would advise anybody to sign a contract like that without finalised negotiations before it. It would be just potentially setting everyone up for unnecessary law suits.

That's the thing, us as boxing fans just want to see fights and we think the process that Wilder is saying is a simple one, but it's real life and business. It's not that simple, anybody that's dealt with contracts within business will tell you that.

I agree, it's difficult, but I also think it's foolish to believe Wilder is AFRAID of Dillan Whyte!
