That's true, but I guess he just wanted more time to improve or more money to face that level of opponent. He's probably not that unusual in mindset. To some fans it's almost as if there are 2 types of boxers: the first type is a fearless warrior who will always fight anyone, travel to any country, accept any lowball offer just for the sake of proving their greatness, and the second type is one who will always cherry-pick, stack the deck in his favour with location, officials, weight etc. and never accept a risky opponent even if offered retirement money. Reality is almost all boxers are somewhere in the middle in their mindset and the risks they take.
He did duck in the past and that was annoying especially as he's always been a mouthy fucker. It shouldn't just be forgotten. But looking at his career as a whole, he took a dangerous fight against a quality opponent before getting a title shot (Eubank), won the belt against a top 10 guy rather than being handed it/winning vacant, and travelled to defend against a top 10 guy. People can say he just waited for Golovkin to get old, but he's willing to face Canelo as well and has been for a while.
