If YOU were Rigo's trainer, what would you have done when he wanted to QUIT??

It's the end of the 6th. Your undefeated, P4P fighter comes back and says, "My hand is broke, I can't do this anymore" (or whatever he said). What's your response?

This isn't some kind of bait Q. I just want to know how people would respond if someone they looked after and cared about hit them with something like that. Honest answers appreciated.

Personally, I would not accept it. I'm hardest on the people I care about and honestly, I'd probably go off. I'd let him know that getting back in there with Loma would be easier than what I would do to him if he quit on me like that.

    How bout you?

Remind him that Lomachenko is a fire that he, as a firefighter, can extinguish

He wasn't throwing that left anymore, only when he was desperate in spots after clinching and was only throwing to the head. Loma has more torso mass than most of Rigos previous opponents and that's what you get when focusing on the body. Guys like Amagasa or Flores are lighter in the torso as their weight is distributed in their longer limbs. Liam Smith was a big 154 guy, when Nelo landed hell on his body sure enough he injured his hand. When Nelo fought Julio he was still cautiousand mainly focused on his head.

As Virgil Hunter just told Dontaes boxing nation, Loma didnt do any damage to Rigo. Lomas had a hard time catching him. 12 round's of that what's the point. Industry has already acknowledged it.

Strongly advise him to go back in and go out on his shield. If for no other reason then his future marketability and ability to make money, plus to keep his reputation in tact. People would have been more accepting of the injury, and he might have been seen as a martyr.

I think he actually thought he was keeping his rep in tact by avoiding a beating and likely stoppage loss. He was relatively untouched at the time of the retirement, but actually that decision really backfired.

I would have got right in his face with one of these...

Just to remind him of what he doesn't have.

I would be like Teddy Atlas going off on Michael Moorer, but I would still give him the choice and ask him if he still wants to quit because it's his legacy and rep on the line. If a fighter even thinks about quitting, he already quit. Can't force him to do anything, he's a grown man, not a kid.

If I looked into his eyes and saw that he was truly done I would stop it. I would however get him to confirm that he was 'out' before doing anything.

The trainers job is the support their fighter, not make them fight against their will.

His reputation is in tatters, but hypothetically had he continued his health may have been left in tatters. As a trainer I wouldn't force that upon my fighter.

Of course I'd try and will him back into the fight and support him, but if he said with 100% sincerity to me that (as your question states) "I can't do this anymore" then I would have to accept it no matter how much it pained me.

As other posters have said I would stop it, if he doesn't want it anymore why should I force him??
