Comments Thread For: Arum Not Least Bit Surprised Lomachenko Made Rigondeaux Quit

NEW YORK Bob Arum might've been surprised had he not seen this scenario unfold during previous Vasyl Lomachenko fights. Lomachenko's promoter knew, as did Lomachenko, there was a realistic chance the Ukrainian southpaw could make Guillermo Rigondeaux quit before they completed 12 rounds Saturday night in The Theater at Madison Square Garden. Lomachenko broke unbeaten Nicholas Walters' will a year ago in Las Vegas and Jason Sosa considered nine one-sided rounds more than enough against Lomachenko four months later.

The writing on the wall for me was around the beginning of Round 4. Rigo looked completely frustrated and for the first time had to dig in his bag of tricks to make an adjustment only to find lint.

Never seen Rigo come foward like that. Never took a backstep. Like he was ordered to come foward or else.

Lomachenko is a great talent — been following him since his amateur days — but he didn’t make Rigondeaux quit. Rigondeaux made Rigondeaux quit. It takes a vicious beating to stop a real champion, and often it’s the corner that has to step in to save the champ from himself. Rigondeaux was barely touched in that exhibition. He quit because he knew he couldn’t win, and would likely be embarrassed in the process. Promoters say all kinds of stuff to hype their fighters. Vasyl is a stud. I would be promoting the hell out of him.

That was a bad look to quit like that for Rigondeaux. You wait a long time for a big showcase fight, hurt or possibly break one hand and quit? You gotta try and win the one hand or hang in there, not just say nah that's it this Loma is too tricky.

Anyone hear any follow up as to the injury? I have heard zero. Remember when everyone attacked Manny Pacquiao blamed a bum shoulder for his crap performance against Mayweather? A few days later, he had surgery and at least people knew that injury was legit even if most still think Mayweather just schooled him.

If Rigo ends up with a legit injury, that will "help" with a future bout. Anything less and he became a figure like Nicolas Walters overnight, only a little bit worse for faking something to get out of the fight.

                    So.. . Anyone heard anything?
