Comments Thread For: Miguel Cotto is Very Firm That Retirement Decision is Final

Puerto Rico's Miguel Cotto goes out a warrior, but not a winner, after dropping a unanimous 12-round decision Saturday to Sadam Ali in a world title fight he vowed would be his last. Before adoring fans at Madison Square Garden, the 37-year-old Cotto just didn't have enough against his 29-year-old opponent. Ali seized the World Boxing Organization light middleweight world title the Puerto Rican won in August with an undisputed decision over Japan's Yoshihiro Kamegai.

Perfect timing for Cotto to walk away from the sport. He felt Ali's punches more than he would have earlier in his career. He fought threw an injury and paid for it by having less to discourage SA. And got buzzed for his effort to give us fans a fight. The hall of fame is waiting for Miguel Cotto and he deserves to be there after a great career. Didn't win them all but gave his best in every fight.
Very thankful for all the times I've enjoyed watching him fight.

Kudos to Saddam Ali. He beat the odds. Everyone thought he was there to lose and he won the fight.

Thank you Miguel. Has been shot for years but was matched perfectly since the Trout loss.

Good for Miguel. He has nothing left to prove. Miguel Cotto will be a hall of famer possibly first ballot and now he can move on to becoming a full time promoter now.

Agree. I was among those who thought he would have been wiped away. I should have studied the fight better instead, and placed some money on Ali at prohibitive odds. But I did not, unfortunately.

Respect to a true warrior. He deserves rest and time to bask in retirement. He was somewhere between the level of an action fighter like Gatti and just below the elite of Pacquaio and Mayweather. He had a few notable wins though, over Mosley, Martinez and Margarito in rematch, and gave Floyd a tough time.
