Comments Thread For: Groves: Golovkin is Too Small, Should Not Come To 168

IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs) is one title away from unifying the entire division at 160-pounds. Once that goal is achieved or even abandoned, Golovkin may pursue the idea of capturing a world title at super middleweight - which is eight pounds north. One of the top fighters at the weight, WBA super middleweight champion George Groves, believes the undefeated fighter should remain at 160-pounds - and avoid, if possible, a move up.

100% Golovkin often weighs in at 159 and we see how easy he makes the weight. Despite being 178cm tall i still feel Canelo is a bigger middleweight. Plenty of big fights at 160 for GGG.

Groves has admitted that he is a changed man after the Gutknecht tragedy, so one has to imagine his boxing trip coming to an end soon. A lot of fighters who caused harm to their opponents have never been the same afterwards (one notable exception being Sergey Kovalev, though).

Think, for example, of Gabe Ruelas who after the death of Jimmy Garcia turned from lion to lamb, and was destroyed by Azumah Nelson in his next big fight.

It always gets taken for granted that super middles are naturally walking around at 13 stone least, Calzaghe was usually around 14 stone if a bit higher.

Froch was exception to the rule in that he was lighter.

Groves has sparred GGG. GGG said he was 'normal'. But to be fair I don't know if it is his poor English or not but I've never heard GGG say anything that nice about anyone but Canelo. It would be fun to see Groves absolutely lace GGG with a right hand because he would, at least a handful of times. He'd probably still eat them like biscuits.

I agree with groves he's too small for 168, he has potential fights at middleweight with Canelo, Jacobs, Charlo, Andrade and Derevyanchenko that's plenty of good names and big fights for him at that weight, he's also likely to earn more money against those guys than the 168 guys.

Tbf though I wouldn't mind seeing a fight with GGG and DeGale/Eubank Jr at 168 in the U.K. They would be PPV fights here in the U.K.

Of course, like I said also Kovalev was the same (perhaps even more merciless) after Roman Simakov died at his fists.

To my eyes Groves looks like one who's more easily affected by contrary events of such a kind.

I have to agree with bum George Groves on this one, first of all Triple-Duck is old second hes scared to challenge himself and rather beat up 154 pounders ; now hes struggling when he step up against the top middleweights so whats the best supermiddle weight on the plant ( James Chunk Degale ) going to do to him?

Even when Golovkin was fighting 4 times a year staying in shape with the right diet his sunken eyes were still looking gaunt and suspect. People forget the initial press conferences on how Gennady looked walking around 190lbs with that gut vs Alvarez. GGG could easily do 168 comfortably and build muscle just like any other protocol for boxers conditioning to a new division.

Didn't Groves say GGG cracked one of his ribs? seems like Groves feeling salty that a name like GOlovkin will come to 168. Ideally he will be more comfortable there and not drained. Groves seem to have forgotten that GGG wanted Froch and Chavez Jr. at 168 who are big guys... oh no wait, in 2013, Golovkin wanted Bhop at the full 175...

and people think GGG doesn't drain and milk the division...
