"For the heavyweight championship of the world" used to be the most stirring phrase in all of sports, and still is if you get the right pairing into the ring. If any of those self-important, money-grabbing alphabet turds see the need for an extra weight class, they should create a name for that new division (mid-heavy or whatever) - not tamper with heavyweight as the supreme title. Life is always changing and humans are getting bigger and bigger but there'd be no advantage in breaking with tradition here. And never mind what they have in amateur boxing with its super-heavy class. That's a sport in itself, a good sport and the breeding ground for most pros, but a world away from the real fight game. Heavyweight champion of the world was good enough for Johnson, Dempsey, Louis, Ali and all the others, and they were mighty proud of being exactly that. Champs yet to come would share that pride, plus that connection with the past. There are different ways of accommodating change. Some things are best kept the same.

        We agree 100%.

We have no issue with the idea of adding an 18th weight class, but it would be a terrible mistake to ********** the cache of being "heavyweight champion of the world" by essentially making it a junior heavyweight title, while the true champion of boxing is stuck calling himself "super heavyweight" champion despite all the greats before him not having that clunky moniker bestowed upon them.

Super Cruiserweight, Junior Heavyweight, Bruiserweight, Middle Heavyweight, Classicweight (a nod to the heavies of yesteryear) etc would all be suitable options for a weight class with a limit of approximately 220 pounds (which could then be raised to 225 or 230 as humans evolve).

But if the term heavyweight is co-opted and stolen from the unlimited weight class, serious damage is being done to the history and tradition of the sport.

Our feelings have been made known to the WBC and the WBC leadership doesn't necessarily favor the change, but it is something being explored after being suggested by a continental affiliate. However, any safety concerns don't change the fact that you can simply call the 220 class anything other than heavyweight and people wouldn't have a problem with it. This is not about fighter safety. This is about stealing the name of the unlimited division and giving it to a division which isn't unlimited. Which is inexcusable.

Yea honestly I'd rather see CW bumped up 5-15lbs (205-215) & a limit put on HW (265 like in MMA) cuz unlimited weight is pretty f#cking ****** if you think about it.

I think that'd solve a lot of the big weight disadvantages. Guys who were 225-230 could cut weight to get down to 215 potentially to avoid fighting these guys who got 30lbs+ on them.

So you want to make it illegal to find out who the best boxer in the world is?

How would I be doing that exactly? The best boxer seems to rarely be a HW if we are speaking of P4P sci fi fantasy bs.

And if you are saying the HW's are the best boxers cuz they are the biggest than that'd still be the case they'd just need to weigh between 215-265 instead of 200+. Generally anyone over 265 is a freak show so aren't serious anyway. Miller & that caveman looking 7ft title holder back awhile ago might be the top two over 265lb guys (on a regular basis) in the last few decades. 265+ guys aren't general capable boxers so idk that we are losing much by pushing them into their own freakshow division like they've been in MMA.

I hope the limit is around 235 lbs, this way all these fat 260+ pounders will either fight each others in a division nobody cares about or they will whip themselves into shape to fight guys their natural size. heavyweights getting into the ring out of shape is hurting boxing badly. Looks matter to casuals and hopefully even the superheavyweight division will have a weight cap to force these fighters to at least get in shape for their fights.

How can WBC Just create a new division?

Association of Boxing Commissions (ABC) has to have a say in this?
                  Right?

No, the IBA already has a Super Cruiserweight division at 210 lbs, with its Cruiserweight limit being 190 lbs. I think that would be the best solution for the WBC too
