  • Comments Thread For: WBC Prez is Firm on Exploring New Weight Class at Heavyweight

BoxingScene.com reported on Friday, that the World Boxing Council (WBC) will explore the possibility of creating a new division - by splitting the heavyweight division in two - heavyweight and super heavyweight. The WBC will conduct a six month long study on the matter, to determine if they will move forward with a new weight division.

Yeah well this is no secret. It's clear that the WBC's new business model is to get sanctions on as many fights as possible. More weight classes = more belts. You hardly hear of any fight these days that isnt for a WBC silver or a mariachi belt or some other piece of crap. God Bless Canelo for sticking up right up their greedy asses

There should have been a super heavyweight division long ago. A 205 lb guy fighting a 270 pounder is ****ed up..., although the really huge guys are usually slow as molasses.

Where will they create the heavyweight limit?....230? 240? 250?

Don't mind splitting the heavyweight into 2 weight classes. As far as the sanctioning weight fees, fighters pay for it, not you.

There's not a lot of what I would classify as super heavyweights.

But it makes sense. Asking a 6'3 heavyweight that comes in around 220ish to fight a 6'7" man weighing 240+ is a big disadvantage. Of course it can be done, but the same concept exists of smaller, more skilled fighters moving up in weight to fight bigger opponents.

The only issue, is there is such a small % of the population that hits this range, much less, professionally boxes.

Perhaps they should adjust cruiserweight to 190, and add a super cruiserweight for around 210 lbs. Heavyweight can be anything above that. Smaller heavyweights can cut water weight and all down to 210 easily enough I imagine.

If it wasn't for 205 pound men taking on 270 pound monsters, 98% of the people on this board would never have been born.

He's right on this one, I don't like alphabet orgs and I don't care about one extra weight class, in the long run it will create more depth and quality and reduce fat bums at the middle and lower levels.

A good 220lb heavyweight can always elect to fight in the higher weight class if he wants.
Look at how cruiserweight has improved since raising to 200lbs.

I think heavyweight at a 220lb limit will improve hugely at the club fight level , losing many of the fat lard asses who will slim down or get smashed by super heavyweights.

People are much bigger than 50 years ago, not just fatter but bigger humans, many caucasian and western black guys naturally are around 175-220lb if they were athletes, they need to maximise the potential here.
If a 215 lb wants to move up he can but you will get a lot of skilled cruiserweights in the new heavyweight class , it will be great.

It's only the very top level that is athletic 6'6 250lb monsters, most heavyweights are smaller naturally.
This way both classes will be better conditioned as their weight class is more fair and competitive.
Many super heavys can't rely on size as much and need to upskill and get in shape.
