Comments Thread For: Showtime's Espinoza Explains Decision To Air Wilder-Stiverne II

It was no secret that Stephen Espinoza, the Executive Vice President and General Manager of Showtime Sports, was not a fan of the fight between WBC heavyweight champion, Deontay Wilder, and his number one contender Bermane Stiverne, who had met a couple of years earlier. With their reticence about airing this bout, a pairing between Wilder and Cuban puncher Luis Ortiz (27-0, 23 KOs) - a much more palatable bout to the public - was consummated for November 4th at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn, New York.

. The Superwelters not unifying, then Mares and Leo not fighting each other. Then this Crap Wilder vs stivern 2. Then no
Danny Garcia vs Porter, winner gets Thurman or Spence.

This is what happens when you're not looking far ahead. You end up making decisions at the last minute. Fighters should be asked whether they're ready for their next fight after 2-3 months of their last fight, not after 5-9 months.

As much as I would like to blame Haymon, here are the facts.

        1. The WBC made Stiverne the mandatory and ordered Wilder to fight him again. Stiverne has zero to do with Al.

        2. Mares was ready for Santa Cruz, who backed out of the fight and wanted a tuneup. That fight is set for March, provided both win.

        3. Danny Garcia was not yet ready to fight again, so Porter took on Granados. But WBC is dragging their feet on ordering Porter-Garcia.

This is what happens when a fighter has an entire division in fear. At least Stiverne has the balls to step up to the plate without using PEDs or waiting until 2025.

This guy is desperate for fights! Not long ago, Espinoza was claim Showtime was taking the #1 spot from HBO! There's a reason HBO stop doing business with Haymon! They are demanding huge paydays for crappy fights! People want to criticize other promoters especially Arum but no one has the stable Haymon has so there is no excuse not to have more big fights per year! Porter and Spence seem to be two of very few of Haymon fighter who are really genuine about fighting other top guys under the same banner!

Hit the nail on the head. Once Ortiz fell out it was either televise Wilder vs. Stiverne or remove him from the card. Since its a fight that Wilder had to be take care of anyway and both were already scheduled for the same card it makes sense. Better for Wilder to get rid of the mandatory and stay active than sit this one out.

Now Breazele will probably get a soft touch if he stays on the card.

Hate that it won't be Ortiz, but at least ok with there being a halfway credible substitute.
