It could have been a ploy to force Canelo to adopt the style he did, making it more of a boxing match. While Canelo was waiting for the big ones to come raining in, Golovkin was, as usual methodically and relentlessly pressing the action with punches seemingly more intent on scoring than destroying.
In other words, GGG won the battle of minds. It's just a theory, and I could be wrong, but Golovkin surely is smart enough to know that at this level of competition, he better have sharp boxing skills, for if he doesn't bludgeon Jacobs or Canelo he must attempt to outbox them, which no one expected him to do.
