Comments Thread For: Frank Warren: Joshua-Pulev, Many Other Fights Aren't PPV Worthy

Frank Warren understands as well as anyone that if a promoter thinks boxing fans should pay extra to watch a fight, he can assume the financial risk and make it a pay-per-view event. The veteran British promoter still thinks there has been a saturation of pay-per-view events in his market. Warren doesn't consider Anthony Joshua-Kubrat Pulev a fight worthy of the pay-per-view platform.

Most fights aren't PPV worthy but that would NOT stop Frank warren himself putting one on in future.

While I agree with most of what he says in this interview for a change I'm not exactly sure how he can argue that the Joshua fight isnt worthy of PPV when its going to sell more tickets to see it live as some past fights have sold PPV's. While the fight does not interest me enough to pay for it I will be shocked if it don't outsell the Canelo GGG PPV number in the UK.

Most PPV's are not worthy .Parker v Fury , Eubank jr.s fights .Not even sure AJ's next fight should be and if he moans about wanting a bigger purse fight a Wilder or something that will whet the appetite and fans will look forward and won't mind paying for.

It seems with Eddie that everytime one of his fighters laces his gloves up it must be on PPV. ......and people wonder why there's so much streaming.

I think he has a fair point about exposure, but I'm not sure it's substantiated by any data. I feel like I watch a fair amount of fights via YouTube anyway after, they've already happened to see what a fighter is about.

I think exposure mostly comes from sites like this and all those YouTube channels. I usually hear about a guy (for example Mike Conlan during the Olympic run). Then I go back and pull his record, then maybe a few fights to make a call on him. But he's always on my radar after that.

Not saying that I'm an advocate for PPV, but I get why they're doing it more in the UK. The ticket prices and PPV costs are so low for consumers compared to the US that the extra money can go a long way in paying purses, breaking even, or even making a profit.

Boxing promoting is like opening a restaurant. You can lose a lot of money quick. The extra 50k - 100k in sales at $26 apiece makes a real difference for the bottom line of a card. Frank knows that.

He must think fighters should get less money too.

AJ vs Kublev will definitely sell a bucket load of PPV's so yeah you could justify it being PPV worthy just based on that fact alone.

What i think Warren means though is that as a Match-up, is it PPV quality and is it the BEST OF THE BEST fighting each other and a unification fight. That answer is definitely NO to this.

NO ONE is demanding a AJ vs PULEV fight but they definitely are demanding an AJ vs Wilder fight, AJ vs Parker fight or an AJ vs Daniel Dubois fight.

PPV's should only be deemed for fight's like CANELO vs GGG and AJ vs KLITSCHKO.

I'm sure that Warren will make BJS vs Canelo/GGG winner in September 2018 a PPV but that's justified as its a fight for all four belts in Boxings and crowning an UNDISPUTED CHAMPION.

He says certain fights shouldn't be on PPV because it limits how much exposure boxers can get. But then uses AJ as an example when the guy gets as much exposure as anyone, he's on the side of buses promoting clothing lines, on billboards promoting sports drinks, all over multiple TV shows and heavily promoted by Sky. He's already massively popular not some little-known prospect. Another issue is that Warren runs Boxnation, which attracts zero new fans and gives no new exposure to anyone because only people who already like boxing are going to pay for it.

Another thing is that he sites Eubank-Dentist as an example. That would be a good argument coming from virtually anyone else, because that fight should be on regular ITV. But the thing is, Warren launched Boxnation claiming it was going to show all the available fights. Then a significant boxing competition comes along and he doesn't even secure the rights, just moans that someone else did and he doesn't like their broadcast model.

Oh yeah and I don't really consider GGG-Canelo a PPV worthy fight in the UK. Maybe I'm wrong, not like we'll ever know the numbers, but it just seemed to me there was no real buzz or interest in that fight over here other than among hardcore boxing fans. 100% of the casuals I know didn't care about that fight.

I Agree fully, I dont think the fight is worth paying for so I wont buy it but Its hard to argue a fight isnt PPV worthy if it sells more than a fight that I think is PPV worthy which is what hes doing.

PPV fights are very easy to determine if its been worthy or not you just look at how many they sell and Strictly speaking its a fight between the number 1 and 3 heavyweight in the world which is easy to justify as a PPV fight as rightly or wrongly heavyweight fights tend to attract bigger audiences.
