Garcia doesn't need a tune up. Its not like Keith Thurman thoroughly outclassed him. It was a good fight and a close one. I don't have a problem with him taking a step back because getting someone else at that level is a little tricky but there is no reason he should go as low as Rios. Rios looks shot. Rios needs to prove he isn't to earn a shot at someone like Garcia.
Here are some options Garcia could have chosen instead. To be sure, I am not saying these guys are all great opponents. I am not saying Garcia wouldn't blast out the vast majority of them. I am certainly not saying that people wouldn't crap on Garcia for picking one of these guys instead. What I am saying is the following: All these guys are at least a step below Thurman, are ranked higher in one or more sanctioning bodies than Rios, seem to be available barring injuries or other issues I don't know about and have done more recently to show they aren't shot. Some of them even have name value to people who are more than just casual fans. Saddam Ali, Mauricio Herrera (he definately deserves a rematch), Lamont Peterson (ditto), Jessie Vargas, Kostantin Pomoranev, Bradley Skeete, Luis Collazo. Rios is probably the biggest name available but even when he wasn't washed up he wasn't on Garcia's level. And now he looks washed up.
I honestly cannot believe someone who dogs GGG and his opposition as much as you do is ok with Garcia fighting Brandon Rios.Comment
