Comments Thread For: Eddie Hearn on The State of The Boxing Business

Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Sports will be embarking on their initial promotion in the United States on November 11th in Long Island, New York, with a card that will be headlined by his newest client, middleweight contender Danny Jacobs, who will be paired with Luis Arias. Hearn, one of the most successful promoters in the game, gave an interesting answer when asked about the current state of the boxing industry.

By far the best promoter in the sport today.
      Not even close.

Really dont understand the hate he gets.

Nobody is perfect but compared to Don King, Arum, Oscar and The others he is better.

Ive said it before that top fighters are getting paid too much.

People dont want to hear it because we love them and they are the ones putting their lives on the line, but the fact is, like Hearn says, people, the ones putting together events and investing money in the sport, arent making profit in boxing.

We are left with a situation where anything resembling a top fight needs to be on PPV because the purse demands are way beyond what can be made without it. The undercards are often horrific because the main event has ****** up all the cash.

A better system would have fighters paid after 'the sport' has had its cut. IE, investment in infrastructure, investment in youth development, investment in marketing etc. All that good stuff that helps keep a sport sustainable and helps a sport grow. That would mean a pay cut for the top dogs, but the benefits would be felt right to the bottom of the sport, more people in gyms, more people watching local shows, more fans of 'boxing' rather than fans of one fighter.

Everything in boxing is so short sighted, nobody, no institution, promotional company, sanctioning body or commission cares about the long term health of boxing like FIFA, NBA, NFL, LTA, ICC does in other sports.

How you get to that point from where we are now is anyones guess. I almost feel boxing needs to fall off the map completely before it can be rebuilt properly.

That said, I dont think Hearn is anything special in the way he intends to run things. He has made very little attempt to make boxing a functioning well run sport in this country and I doubt he will in America either. He is about whipping up casuals, getting bums in seats, getting PPV's sold, and getting on to the next fight. Long term be damned.

People here actually love him but I dont know why he got booed at AJ/Vlad fight.. That was the first time he got boo'd and it made no sense as it was a sold out crowd and the fight actually lived up! Best fight of the year and the best heavyweight fight I ever seen live.

The thing is he's good at his job and likable as a person. Most promoters are money snatching snakes with no charisma but Hearn, he’s cut from a different cloth. He’s the best promoter by a long shot.

Hearn is OK but at the end of the day hes your standard promoter. Haymon and even Arums son in law have a long-term vision for the sport, Hearn just trying to make a buck.

I think it started because of the ridiculous Stubhub situation at Hearn shows. After that the majority probably just joined in without realising why.

Imagine a show being 'sold out' in 0.002 seconds and then 90,000 ending up on stubhub for 10X the price the next day.

What he is best at, and what he deserves full credit for as the best in the world, is using social media and internet marketing techniques to reach fans.

Much of that was probably in place at Matchroom before he was a big boxing player (not sure if you are UK, but his dad Barry HEarn was a major boxing promoter here in the 90's and has recently done amazing things with darts)

He is definitely charismatic too. He has an excitable and positive personality which I think connects with fans, especially casuals, pretty quickly.

So as a promoter he is very good. But in this day and age we have apparently left the job of organising the sport to promoters as well, despite the fact it doesnt make much sense to do so, and in that sense he hasnt been that great so far.
