Comments Thread For: Salido Breaks From Sanchez, Big Bear - Heads To Mexico, Memo

Last week, BoxingScene.com reported that former world champion Orlando 'Siri' Salido had arrived in Big Bear for a test run with Mexican trainer Abel Sanchez, as the veteran fighter prepares for his next fight against an opponent yet to be defined, according to manager Sean Gibbons. It had been said that Salido was going to face Puerto Rican fighter Jonathan Oquendo on November 25 as part of the undercard of Sergey Kovalev and Vyacheslav Shabransky from New York's Madison Square Garden Theater - but those plans may change.

Very, very interesting in lieu of modern sports science and the increased attention on whether training and sleeping in high altitude is good for your career long-term, especially with the way that all three of the sport's highest profile fighters who have trained at Big Bear, GGG, Kovalev, and Chocolatito, all saw unusually sharp decline in their early thirties.

It's possible that Abel Sanchez, not knowing any better years ago before any studies had been done on altitude training, simply built his gym in the wrong place. To anyone who knows boxing history from the 80s and 90s better than I do, I would also be interested to hear what became of any other top boxers that trained in Big Bear after they turned 30. Are GGG, Kovalev, and Chocolatito random exceptions, or if someone looked back and studied it with a closer eye, are they just the latest in a trend of boxers from Big Bear who have declined sharply in their early thirties after their bodies could no longer handle the attitude?

I thought Mosley, ODLH, Tyson and Fernando Vargas also trained there from time to time. I'm no expert but I'd guess the three you mentioned had more challenges for other reasons than altitude. It's a brutal sport and they all got older and went up in competetition level, and Chocalatito went up in weight. Not to mention they are all aggressive fighters who sacrifice some defense to deliver punishment.
