Before Cotto and Chavez Jr, two of the biggest names in the sport, Canelo was only getting between 250k and 350k pay-per-view buys per fight. People have to understand that Canelo-Cotto was Mexico's #1 star against Puerto Rico's #1 star, and it still did less than 1 million. Canelo-Chavez Jr was a Mexican fantasy fight that most thought would never happen, and even though the fight itself was a huge letdown, going into it it was a huge fight for the Mexican audience.

So for Canelo-GGG to best both the Mexican-Puerto Rico fight, and the Mexican fantasy fight, says a lot about GGG's star power. This is Canelo's biggest pay-per-view of his career not involving Mayweather. That says a lot. I have no idea where the "2 million" number came from, but that was never realistic. As I said, Canelo-Chavez Jr was a huge, huge fight for the Mexican PPV audience, and that only did 1.1 million. That shows you what the ceiling sort of is for that audience specifically, so for Canelo-GGG to do more than that means they not only retained all of that audience, but also added a couple hundred thousand more viewers.

To go along with the third biggest gate of all time, this is an impressive number.
