Comments Thread For: HBO's Lampley: Ward Was Talking Joshua Bout Before Retirement

HBO's longtime analyst Jim Lampley was very surprised when light heavyweight king Andre Ward (32-0, 16 KOs) announced his retirement last week. Ward, only 33 years old, was ranked by many as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the sport. He was easily in line for several potential paydays at light heavyweight and there was even talk of facing Tony Bellew at cruiserweight.

Why is anyone but so surprised? Ward started talking about retiring after the first Kov fight. Especially at his age.

Just like it wouldn't surprise me to see GGG retire within the next year.

        That tongue in cheek...

Ward barely fought Kovalev... and never left his Country during the Super 6 - didn't even want to fight Froch in neutral territory - he wanted every fight in Oakland. He fought every fight in Oakland except the Froch fight, which was in Jersey, and was the only contestant who didn't leave his country.

He was a dirty fighter who needed almost everything in his favor before he'd take a fight.

HBO blows Ward, and I'm not surprised Lampley sucks cack here.

If a prime Ward fought a prime Calzaghe in the UK, Calzaghe would have won easily and we'd be talking about what a hype job Ward and how he needs American refs to let him fight dirty.

Yeah, just like the NFL players of late that get in and get out while youre still healthy. Nothing but respect. Dont let boxing retire you.
          As for
GGG he really doesnt have any big fights left after Canelo, and he just made enough money to retire on with his last fight, He can buy a goat, horse and a cow and he's a good back in his homeland.

Point is the Joshua fight was never seriously considered - Ward has always been a "I need everything in my favor before I take a fight" fighter. It's a joke that Lampley acts like Ward was seriously considering the Joshua fight.

Ward almost ruined the entire Super 6. if Froch didn't agree to fight in Jersey, Ward was going to pull out of the tournament rather than fight Froch in the UK. But Ward forced everyone else to fight him in Oakland... Ward is a coward and cheater - that's what I'll remember him as.

It doesn't matter, fighters need to know when to go out and now come back. Hopefully more boxers would do this, Lennox lewis/Marcos Maidana did it and its nice to see them nowadays. Just don't retire and then comeback a year or 2 years later like Mayweather did. Have all your faculties with you and enjoy your retirement with your family.

I have no idea of the inter workings of Andre Wards mind but Lampley is a pure scumbag and everything he says should ne given ZERO credibility

Dude shut up. You come on here talking nonsense constantly. Already called your bull**** once before.

Ward fought everybody there was for him to fight. How can you "barely" fight someone? That's just more of your bias crybaby ****. Nothing but excuses. First people were saying he couldn't leave oakland. Then he goes to Vegas and beats an overrated Kovalev.

How can you say HBO was riding Ward when they wouldn't put him as P4P for years, when it was clear he was the top guy? They've always discredited him.

Just a few weeks ago, a writer on this site wrote a piece debating him against Michael Spinks and called it a draw. He's probably the best or second best 168 guy ever. And he's up there at LHW. Just grow up. You're probably some middled aged weirdo throwing out insults across the net all day towards better men than you out of resentment. Sad stuff.
