Sergey Kovalev might've learned something important from John David Jackson after all. Kovalev revealed Thursday that he has been considering hiring Virgil Hunter, Andre Ward's career-long trainer, to replace John David Jackson. Russia's Kovalev confirmed Saturday that he won't work with Jackson anymore because he doesn't think the former junior middleweight and middleweight champion taught him enough to take his career to the next level.

If Kovalev gets Virgil Hunter, much more important is that he makes sure Victor Conte's SNAC facility, and "nutrition" program, comes with the package. They did wonders with both Jacobs and Ward this year helping them cut and rehydrate 20 pounds, give or take, over the weight limit. That helped them take the shots. So if Kovalev trains with Virgil Hunter, but doesn't have acne all over his back for his next few fights, then we'll know Kovalev didn't get the full package Ward got. That full package is the key, not so much Virgil Hunter.

If Kovalev really wants a new trainer he should go with Thurmans trainer Birmingham, hes the best trainer in boxing IMO. But training a sea level may be counter productive for a guy with a soft mid section.

In regards to Virgil though, he offered to work with Kovalev. It isn't something Kov sought out.

Did Ward have acne for the Kov fights? I don't know his acne history, so I know this isn't a definitive yes/no regarding whether doping was involved...
