I hate to say this but...significantly above makes it sound like a lie.

Why not say it did around 1.5m or more than 1.5m? 1.7 or 2.0? Sounds like it did anywhere between 1.0-1.4m. But we aren't going to get the truth smh.

Nice. I expected over a mill. Now if they did over 1.5M that'd be really solid. And the good thing for them is whatever the ending number the rematch is almost for sure going to do more.

I just am rooting on these guys not marinating this a full 12mos to next September. By September Joshua vs Wilder could be fighting & if Joshua can capture the US imagination (& he's more entertaining then Canelo & even GGG with his hilarious talking combined) + Wilder can get some nice KO's over guys more hyped by boxing fans + media they could get overshadowed again like they surely did with Conor vs Floyd.

So they need to make part II in May to best benefit all parties & not risk lowering buys cuz people only got $80 to spend vs $160 to spend on boxing right before the holidays.

And this is probably at the high 1,700,000. Either GGG did something in this PPV or he did not.
Look at the last PPV numbers of both fighters against "no name" opponents.

Canelo vs Smith did 260k, Golovkin vs Jacobs did 170k.

Canelo vs Golovkin or, if you prefer, Golovkin vs Canelo sold this fight!

Trying to separate the fighters from the fight is ridiculous.

Good observation. Certain fans fail to realize that an event is not an event unless both parties are part of it. Everyone gives Floyd the credit for May/Pac numbers and May/Mac numbers, but those numbers could only be achieved if Pac and Mac are the opponent. So as much as Floyd holds a PPV record, Manny holds it too.

As for GGG/Canelo, it had just the right amount of build up and drama needed to pull big numbers. It didn't marinate for 5 years, and Oscar didn't keep moving the goal post whenever an agreement was reached. It was a good fight, and I think a rematch will pull down even bigger PPV numbers.

OK, man: the fact that the Mexican public was silent during the fight but eventually was booing Canelo at the end may give you the some hint about the "demographics" of those PPVs... (but I admit, I may get this all wrong...)

Exactly Canelo vs Liam Smith was pretty much Canelo by himself and that did about 200k for the 97k guys who believe Glaser for no reason other than that it makes GGG's numbers lower.

This proves exactly what others have said. GGG's previous ppv numbers were due to him fighting no names. How else do you explain significantly higher ppv numbers than Cotto? GGG does deserve more of the pot next time around
