Ward won both fights - after the knockdown in the 1st one Ward won every round. Second fight, Ward chewed him up and stopped him. The whole fight didn't hinge on a few border line low blows. If Kovalev was a real champion he would have bit down on his gumshield and done the same back to Ward. But he didn't - he crumbled. Kovalev is chinny, has poor stamina and is weak to the body.
Don Turner said it afterwards and he was in his corner - 'Kovalev was just a puncher'.
Him and his fans can live in denial in their minds, but Ward bested him twice and that's reality. And Ward is really a super middle. You can re write history to make you feel better but S.O.G kicked your ass twice, and deep down you know it.

I gave kovalev round 2 & 10 in the 1st fight & Don't remember but in the second fight I also gave him 2 rounds. He got Ward mad, his fans too....Lol

Kovalev made Ward feel human again, it's not so good when you have to fight guys who aren't smaller than you!
Ward got beat up pretty bad by Sullivan Barrera as well, but people turn their blind eye to that and give absolutely no credit to Barrera who was in a very close fight with Ward, crazy what people will do to protect this guy I mean we're talking about fans of his even doing the protecting!

In the rematch, Kovalev hit Ward with two very hard right hands to the body early in the fight, harder shots than the one he broke Agnew's ribs with. Ward took them early, but combined with all the extra muscle he had packed on, and all the energy he exerted trying to knock Kovalev out, I think it would have led to him totally breaking down late. It would have been some of the best action of the last decade, but of course the referee prevented fans from getting their money's worth, and saved the hometown fighter, as usual.

Wow! This is about the worst type of revisionist history I've ever read. It's a good thing that I know you are troll or I would half way believe some of things you are saying. Now back to your drivel; Ward had about a snowball's chance in hell of losing that fight to Kovalev in their rematch because he made adjustments. Sergey shot his loaded very early, was badly gassed and never got a second wind afterwards; As Andre ate his punches and wasn't as nearly or remotely hurt by them.

That was the major reason why the "Krusher" decided to quit and pack it in because he was too tired to fend off Ward and knew that his punches had very little to no effect on SOG to actually hurt him. So he was broken.

It was very similar to the Roger Mayweather/Julio Cesar Chavez rematch. Yeah you remember that one. Once Roger realized he couldn't hurt or stop Chavez with his best shots, he decided to subsequently retire on his stool after the 10th round due to fatigue and discouragement.

Very true. If you watch their rematch with the sound off, it's Ward who gasses very early in the fight with all the extra muscle he put on, and stops throwing punches for two rounds. Then he gets up for one last hail mary attempt to win the fight, just fouling Kovalev constantly because he's desperate, and the ref saved him by stopping the fight. I think if the ref lets it go on, Ward's failed attempt to knock Kovalev out (or even down) outside of the nut shot was all he had left, and Kovalev would have battered him the next few rounds.

Ward was extremely exhausted late in the 1st fight, even though Kovalev did not work the body at all, and Ward had not packed on all that extra muscle. He was so exhausted, he almost went down in the 12th round when Kovalev only tapped him to the liver, without much power on the shot. Deep down, Ward probably understands that as well, and that's probably why he retired. He know he didn't so much beat Sergey Kovalev as he did escape with the help of the NSAC and a good poker face. He also knows that even with the refs help, it was Kovalev being past prime, with stamina problems, that even gave him a chance to escape with their help in the first place. Which means he knows that if he were to fight anyone on that level in their prime, without stamina issues, he would be in huge trouble.

So Ward probably figures its better to retire off two fake victories than it is to retire off getting knocked out, which is what probably happens if Tony Weeks doesn't protect him in the rematch.

Now, I just hope the top light heavyweights actually fight each other...

Kovalev is right though, I would have liked to have seen a 3rd fight.... hopefully with a clear, non controversial ending... alas.

Quitting is not the last laugh both fights were clear, it was the media that made the controversy with the kovalev fans jumping in. If there were a 3rd match that would be 3 L's in a row & I doubt kovalev can afford that.

Sergey Kovalev says he's "disappointed" IBF, WBA, WBO light heavyweight champion Andre Ward is retiring from boxing because "I don't have opportunity to kick his ass again." Anyway, Kovalev knocked down Ward beautifully in the first, Ward had these knees on the floor, Ward never could...

Futhermore Ward knew that he would have been totally destroy with the next Russians : Beterbiev, Bivol or the Ukrainian : Dvozdyk.

So he wisely QUIT at 33 !!!!

In fact Kovalev was only the first of them, the others are coming.

But outta curiosity, has it ever crossed you Kovalevaholics minds that had Sergey not cried wolf so many times on legal blows and not tried to BS himself into breaks when he was hurt from legal shots, maybe he gets a little more help from Weeks on borderline shots? The sequence before the right hand that put Kovalev on ***** Street is a prime example. Kovalev was hit with two legal body shots that doubled him over. He complained, and Weeks wasn't having it anymore. And from Weeks body language you could tell he was tired of Kovalev's crying and complaining. And on the sequence that ultimately ended the fight. I think the final two blows were low. But you Kovalevaholics conveniently forget that Sergey was getting the piss beat outta him and stumbling around the ring. And was once again doubled over, and sat on the middle rope from a legal shot, before the final two. Weeks had a beaten fighter in front of him and protected him. Not to mention. Technically, Kovalev took an illegal position by sitting on the middle rope. Its the equivalent of getting punched in the nutz while you're forcing your opponent's head down. Kovalev forced Ward to hit him low because he bent over below Ward's waist, which is illegal. Is Ward not allowed to attack the body simply because Kovalev is cheating?

Deflectorama there friend, sorry, not abiding by it. Ward is famous for fouls. THAT is the point here. And he did in fact foul in the Kovalev, Froch, Kessler, and many other fights. But I see you'll continue to play deflectorama and sidestep the issue. A true Wardaholic IOW.
