De La Hoya's first loss really was against Shane Mosley. In that fight, he had no plan B. Mosley's straight right hand was neutralizing De La Hoya's left hook. In the first couple of rounds, Mosley came out and rocked DLH on a few occasions with the straight right hand, which was getting to the target before DLH can land the left hook. DLH was fighting Mosley as if he had the speed advantage, and it was of serious detriment to DLH in the fight. He was throwing his jab in a spinning motion, trying to optimize the power on it, whereas Mosley was just trying to land it. When DLH turned the bout around in the middle rounds and started to become effective with the left hook to the body, Mosley picked up the pace and closed the fight stronger. DLH really lost that fight clearly.
In the fights with Quartey and Whitaker, they were close enough that the actual verdicts in favor of DLH weren't totally outrageous. In the Quartey fight, both had their moments but I guess they gave the nod to DLH because of how he closed the show. With Whitaker, you can't really fault the judges for scoring the fight for DLH. He was the more aggressive, active fighter. That fight could have gone either way, they weren't the outrageous highway robberies that De La Hoya detractors claim they were.Comment
