That was suspect as hell. He got the #1 spot in Nov of 2015 after Floyd retired and after he'd beat Viloria. He was 44-0 and they were looking for a guy close to 49-0 who could possibly run the table to 50-0 breaking Floyd's record. He also came cheap and with their boxing budget they needed a cheap hype job. They couldn't do it with GGG because as he became more popular they had to pay his opponents more or put it on PPV. HBO knew they could always get these guys at 108-115 mainly because none of the guys were with Haymon, they were with foreign promoters who would jump at any chance to get their fighters on HBO in America. When I saw him fight for the first time I knew this was a media created hype job (not saying Gonzalez is a hype job but he was way overhyped for that #1 spot). He was signed to a promoter they worked with a a promoter the media loves. Even after not looking impressive against Arroyo, a close fight with Cuadras, and losing to Rungvisai, a lot of the media still refused to take him off the #1 spot. My understanding of p4p is your skills would translate to any weight class. He moved up and once his power and chin didn't translate to higher weight classes he didn't have the skills to overcome his lack of power. No one in their right mind had Arroyo, Cuadras or Rungvisai in their top 50 p4p and he struggled against those guys.
Why did HBO try to convince us Chocolatito was P4P #1?

Because he was / or at least in the conversation
If Ward loses his next fight, it doesn't negate his p4p status of the previous years
If Floyd somehow fights again and loses, it doesn't negate his previous p4p status.
This is basic logic. Chocolatito lost yesterday not before.
So there's zero shame in putting him #1 (even if I didn't agree) because of what happened yesterday.Comment

P4P is sci fi fantasy bs first off, but its not like the guy was a figment of HBO, his promoter or any elses imagination. The guy went through 3 divisions & finally sh^t the bed in the 4th.
I mean the guy did some sh^t lets not act like thats not true cuz he got f#cked up last night finally. Most guys get f#cked up before they accomplish a 10th of what he did. Most mfers can't even become the 4th worst title holder in their division ffs.Comment

He wasn't well-rounded enough in my opinion for such lofty status. When I first saw him, I couldn't believe how easy he was to hit. And HBO tried to sell THAT as P4P #1? I knew what they were doing.Comment

As if it was just HBO
He was universally recognized as #1, and it was largely a matter of circumstance at the time given that Floyd had retired, Manny had just lost and Wlad looked terrible against Fury.Last edited by BrometheusBob.; 09-10-2017, 12:05 PM.Comment

You'd be hard pressed when Roman was tip top to find any dork P4P rankings that didn't have Roman top 3, with most having him #1 & idk if any list existed that didn't have him top 5 & if they did they were a Roman-hater or HBO-hater probably.Comment

In that vacuum right after Floyd retired after beating Berto, he probably was. Around that time Crawford hadn't really gone through the gears, Ward and Rigo were more or less in limbo, Pacquiao was already more or less a spent force, and Lomachenko was still too green. At that point in time the only real legit claimants were probably Golovkin, Kovalev and Gonzalez, and out of those three Roman arguably had the best resume and recent form. To be fair Gonzalez still had an argument for being the top guy right up until he lost to Rungvisai the first time. Of course, it was also around that time that Crawford, Ward and Lomachenko all established their claims for being at the top end of the pecking order.Comment
