why is welerweight so popular?

Like one poster said already, it's probably the only division where there's a constant American presence.Comment

True. And in countries where the average height is shorter the smaller weights are popular. My theory is that the average person falls within the size range of welterweights. There are a lot more 5'7" to 5'10" guys in the world than there are 6'5" or 5'3" guys, making the competition more fierce at every level in that size/weight range.
I don't think my theory is a perfect explanation for why WW is such a stacked division, but it definitely has some merit to it!Comment

Welterweight is one of the original eight weight classes and is steeped in history.
Something like cruiserweight, on the other hand, is a relatively recent invention (dating to 1979) and for better or worse most people feel that if boxers are that big they should just compete at heavyweight to prove their worth.Comment

Because of Oscar De la Hoya and cuz the best boxers of all time were welter-weights.Comment

This. Their size is the size of common people. Plus they dont look super muscled like other divisions. My theory is that the average person falls within the size range of welterweights.
