This is what I wonder. Who is he fighting to prove he's getting better. Was he a better fighter against Lara than he was against Floyd? I don't think so. Is he better now than he was against Lara? How can we know? Kirkland and Khan doesn't give us any yardstick.

Washing Angulo, Kirkland, and Khan after clearly beating Cotto is a pretty good indication.

His punches are very crisp moreso than they were against Mosley for example. His conditioning against Smith was improved compared to Trout.

The guy gets hit less and doesn't even need to sit in between rounds. He's improving.

The Canelo of the Mosley fight, while slightly less experienced, would've used Angulo for target practice because he was one of the slowest fighters out there at that point. He'd have sparked Khan too, first time he hit him, just like Garcia did. Kirkland had life and death with the slow Angulo, and was smashed in a round by Ishida. Canelo would've always dented he's chin too. As for Smith, he's a domestic level fighter, and nowhere near Trout as a talent. The Trout fight was difficult so it taxed he's stamina. Smith was target practice so it didn't demand as much from Canelo.Cotto, smaller, at the end of he's career, we'll beaten by Trout. Beats another old fighter in Sergio. So we don't know what he had left by them. Competitive fight against a smaller older man. Not much to go by. So, yeah, he's more experienced, maybe stronger. But I can't see that he's improved as a fighter by much.Just haven't seen much to base it on.

exactly, that's not a good way to determine if he's improved over the past few yrs. There are plenty of guys in the middle weight division that would've ko'd khan, stopped Liam Smith, and unanimously decisioned that lazy zombie Chavez jr. The x factor may be cotto but you're talking about a cotto who was at a 10 year age disadvantage (and has been in sone real wars) and who was also at a pretty noticeable weight disadvantage on fight night.

They gave us somewhat of a yardstick... but I'm thinking maybe the Cotto fight gave us more. Canelo did some really slick moves in that one.
