Ali was more hated than Mayweather for most of his career. People forget this if they weren't alive and an active fan during Ali's career. He didn't become universally loved until well after he retired.
People hated Ali because of his style of avoiding getting hit (sound familiar?). His haters said he wasn't a real man or a real fighter unless he stood toe to toe. His battles with Frazier were all about the "real" tough guy who kept his mouth shut and wen't toe to toe vs the loud mouthed defensive fighter who won with his smarts and speed and then talked too much.
They also hated when he changed his name and he was so hated when he took a stand against Vietnam that he received countless death threats. He was despised by much of white America for daring to show black pride and for his confidence in himself.
People forget history, they even forget how hated MLK was when he was alive, these facts should not be forgotten because forgetting them downplays the courage these heroes showed. Ali was a hero because half the country wanted him dead, but he still wouldn't sit down and shut up, same with MLK.
