We shall find out though who is on the list and who is more likely to fight Cotto for his last fight.
Yeah but Cotto also said himself I'm not fighting after Dec 2017 will retire. It's almost impossible to think GGG or Canelo which is a big grueling super fight in Sept 16 and then ready to turn around and fight 2 1/2 to 3 months later. Also I don't think Roach is in the loop. It was a nice moment for Cotto to deflect from answering the question on who he is fighting next and throw it to Roach. But I don't put a lot of weight in it Cotto makes his own decisions. Somebody told Rafael Lemieux was next and he bypassed a title shot in Sept because he thinks he has a money fight and he's been name dropping Cotto non stop. Personally I think Khan is a perfect fight Cotto. Maybe Brook too

Its mainly a question if GBP & Canelo wanna fight him again. Thats the only question in my mind.

I guess it wouldn't surprise me if this fight was his last or if he takes another bs fight in December, but the move is Canelo or GGG. Those are the money fights for him. There is nothing at 154 thats pays well with the risk.
... Either Canelo or GGG would be criticized in a wild manner in case they try to take this fight... and a GGG fight would be a massive flop...

Yeah because of the turn around time, I don't think Nelo or G will be next for Cotto.

I'm thinking maybe Fat Dan was told Lemieux was a name they were looking at as one of Golden Boy's leading candidates for Cotto.

I'm with you on Khan, Brook.

I also like a Matthysse fight for Cotto.

        Margarito 3

Can't think of many other names due to recent retirements, scheduling and turn around time conflicts.

But we'll find out soon enough. Ultimately Cotto, Roach, Golden Boy will put their heads together and decide.

I just hope it's not against a fighter that Cotto has no chance with. I'd like to see him retire on a win, not a loss.

Matthyssee I think is too small hell he might be too small for 147. He sat out the Sept Canelo undercard because they were chasing a Pacquiao fight and shot at the WBO title. Matthyssee was the WBO #1 contender but Pacquiao got upset and now they having a Horn rematch and then probably winner vs Crawford. So does he want to stick around and wait for the WBO to mandate his title shot or jump up another weight class and fight Cotto? He's probably better off waiting for his shot at Horn/Pacquiao/Crawford at 147 or try and get a fight with one of the other non title holders at 147 Khan, rematch Danny Garcia, Jesse Vargas.

I don't see this happening. dangerous fight for Cotto, but he can certainly outbox Lemieux

              I'm thinking more of a catchweight @ 150 for Cotto-Matthysse.

Matthysse started his career at 140, Cotto as well. It would be a career high payday for Matthysse. We know Matthysse won't beat guys like Errol Spence or Thurman at 147. He can get a bigger payday against Cotto and has a better chance against 37 year old Cotto than Spence or Thurman.

Cotto only weighed 161 on Saturday against Kamegai. Cotto is not a big dude.

Khan started his career at 135.

Well, we'll see who Cotto ends up fighting. I just hope it's against someone he has a chance at beating.

the real answer is if Cotto wants to maximize 1 last huge payday then just fight somebody late this year and then do like all boxers do and say I know I said I was going to retire but I want 1 more fight. Then fight the winner or loser of Canelo/GGG in 2018. Canelo on Cinco De Mayo 2018 or GGG in NYC at Madison Square Gargen June during Puerto Rican Day parade weekend. Otherwise he has to take a less lucrative fight against guys who are potentially high risk/low reward that are available in Nov/Dec like Lemieux, Khan, Brook, Matthyssee, or he can face his WBO mandatory in Liam Smith/Liam Williams winner.

                  Brook, Thurman, Danny and Mayweather.

Hell, Floyd vs Miguel for the true retirement fight! When Cotto sprks him, the rematch woukd be legendary!

Lucas is short only 5'6, but more importantly Cotto had a long time to slowly move up weight classes to get to 154. Lucas just had 1 fight at 147 and before he can prove himself a real welterweight jump up to Jr Middleweight or a catchweight? It's a fight Cotto would take and be favored but I'm not sure how you convince Lucas to take this especially when he's already guaranteed a title shot with the WBO 147lb champ. If Lucas just wants a payday and a sure L he can take it. Cotto's problem is he doesn't want to fight any of the top contenders or title holders at 154 where he just won a belt. None of those guys are names so it's just all risk no reward. So we are stuck trying to be creative looking at big names at 147 or 160.

Lemieux too big sure Cotto might go up if the payday is crazy that's why he'd do it for a Canelo rematch (still not sure he ever wants GGG he passed on that fight years ago).

Lucas too small. Brook and Khan have both already moved up and can easily make 154. Those guys are perfect size but do either guy want that fight? Then you throw in Cotto's aggressive time table he's dictating. Just eliminate the Dec I'm retiring deadline and it opens up more fights. He sure looks like he has a lot left little to no slippage in the Kamegai fight. Just retire May/June 2018 instead.

And Lemieux had a title shot fall in his lap with Saunders after Kurtz got arrested he became the next WBO top contender. And he turned it down saying he had a bigger fight in the works. Somebody is telling Lemieux and Rafael this fight is happening.
maybe fighting lemieux next was part of the gbp deal with cotto. makes sense for oscar. gets his fighter a big money fight and a very winnable fight at that
